Do the USC Trojans Have Another Reggie Bush in Dillon Baxter?
With all the recent negativity surrounding USC football as of late, there's one shining star that continues to burn bright amidst the darkness:
Dillon Baxter.
I saw a video of Baxter in USC's 2010 spring game, and my oh my, the kid's got some serious speed.
When I first saw the video, I thought someone had mistakenly posted a video of Reggie Bush.
Baxter and Bush have many similarities.
Apart from having last names that start with "B," they both have blazing speed, the ability to make something out of nothing, and the ability to antagonize defenses.
These two have other similarities, too. Like both being high school stars and winning so many awards and accolades it's almost disgusting.
Reggie Bush had a huge impact during his high school years and at USC.
Does Baxter have that same kind of potential?
Baxter graduated a semester early from Mission Bay High School in San Diego, CA.
At Mission Bay, Baxter did it all: He played QB, RB, WR, and returned kicks.
But he did most of his damage at the RB and QB positions.
In 2009, Baxter had 1,922 yards on 102 completions with 25 TDs to only 7 INTs.
He was averaging 147.8 yards a game as a passer in 2009 and completed 61.4 percent of his passes and ended the season with a QB rating of 124.
Jeez.
At the RB spot, Baxter was even more phenomenal.
In 2009, Baxter had a jaw-dropping 2,974 yards on 261 carries, with 50 TDs.
Yeah, I said 50, as in 5-0. As in, f-i-f-t-y.
And if having 50 TDs in one season wasn't enough, the kid averaged 11.40 yards per carry and averaged 228.8 yards a game.
There's some teams in the NFL who didn't even average 228 yards per game on offense.
During his time at Mission Bay, Baxter only fumbled five times, and lost only three of those fumbles.
In other words, the guy's amazing.
But what about Reggie Bush?
Don't think I forgot about him!
Reggie Bush came out of Spring Valley, Ca and went to Helix High School.
Bush's rushing numbers during his career at Helix were amazing.
In his senior year at Helix in 2002, Bush ran for 1,691 yards on 140 carries with 27 TDs. He averaged 12.1 yards a carry and did this all despite missing four games due to a broken wrist.
In his final two seasons at Helix, Bush totaled 4,925 rushing yards and 61 total TDs.
Bush was primarily used as a RB at Helix, but he was as a kick returner and caught a few passes as well.
At USC, Bush did it all, and he had quite a career with the Trojans being an all-purpose back.
Bush had 987 receiving yards on 80 receptions with 9 TDs. He averaged 12.35 yards per reception.
As a RB, Bush had 2,648 yards on 343 attempts with 22 TDs and averaged 15.1 yards a carry during his time at USC.
Judging by Baxter's high school stats, he has all the makings to be the next Heisman Trophy winner for the Trojans, making it eight, or seven, depending on how the NCAA chooses to punish USC.
Either way, exciting things are going to happen at USC in 2010, and I have a feeling Baxter will be responsible for most of them.
