For John Brantley and Cameron Newton, It's a Familar Situation
At this time two years ago, both Cameron Newton and John Brantley were amidst a battle for the honor of backing up Tim Tebow at Florida.
This year, the two will battle each other again, this time for an SEC crown.
Though Auburn and Florida will not face off this year, both Newton and Brantley will start at quarterback for their respective schools and aim to reach the SEC title, where the two teams could potentially meet.
Though they share a common goal, the two QBs have had little in common the past two seasons.
Brantley took the traditional route of a highly-touted prospect, committing to a top BCS school and honing his craft behind the experienced star at his position before taking the reins.
Newton’s road has been far rockier. Also highly rated out of high school, Newton took a few snaps in mop-up duty as a freshman but struggled as a passer and had many penciling in Brantley as the heir apparent at Florida, even though he had redshirted.
Then as a sophomore in 2008, Newton was booted from the team by Urban Meyer following an alleged laptop theft.
After a standout stint at Blinn College in Texas, Newton will take over for the graduated Chris Todd at Auburn and will look to make a new name for himself as a Tiger.
Though their paths have diverged sharply over the years, both Brantley and Newton again will try to prove themselves despite lofty expectations at both schools this season.
Brantley must not only replace a Heisman winner, but one whose words are immortalized outside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
And with an arsenal of weapons at his disposal, he will be expect to have the Gators back in the national championship picture again this season.
While the pressure may not be as great for Newton--none is--the athletic signal caller is expected to lift Auburn back to the top of the SEC and contend once again for the SEC title.
Two years passed, but the same pressure to perform.
