Champions League Final: Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben Return Home

Zaakir HoosenMay 22, 2010

Champions League Final, one of the most anticipated finals in the footballing calendar with some of the world's best players coming head-to-head.

Many might have expected the likes of Barcelona, Chelsea, or even Manchester challenging for this cup, but Bayern and Inter have been strong enough to have come through this season.

Both teams provide something different and both have great coaches with great ambition. Both teams have a chance at a treble and both teams have an amazing Dutchmen in the midfield.

Two former Madristas will return home to challenge for a title that has eluded them while at Madrid for too long.

Wesley Sneihder and Arjen Robben, who together will look to lead the Dutch team to World Cup glory in just about a month's time, but for now they will face each for the first time since they left Madrid.

Both players have been in fine form, Robben maybe scoring more than Wesley, but in terms of offering the team something, both have contributed.

Robben's goals against Manchester United were his biggest contribution for the season, while Wesley's role in the central midfield has made him a supplier for Milito upfront.

But Robben's task won't be that easy this time around, he will face the hardest defense in Europe with an all-South American defense line in Zenetti, Samuel, Lucio, and Maicon.

The same defense that shutout World Footballer of the Year, Lionel Messi, and Barca playmaker Xavi.

While Wesley and company will look to take advantage of a rather tame defense that Bayern have, on many occasions United have got the better of, with Nani and Valencia running riot in the first half of the quarterfinals.

Lyon also proved that with hard work and consistent attacking, areas could be opened up in the Bayern defense.

Mourinho and his men will have worked out exactly how to use Sneijder to feed Eto'o and Milito.

Another area where comparisons can be drawn is set pieces.

Inter will have more points in this department, with Brazilian first-choice Julius Cesar in goal while Bayern have Butt or Rensing, whose abilities have been questioned by United.

Long range efforts from set pieces or open play could work for Inter with Sneijder having a magical foot. Bayern, on the other hand, will have to look to play the ball in small pockets try to break down Inter. Robben, although, poses a might power shot will find difficulty in passing Cesar or his South American defenders.

While many might feel the game is played by 22 players and not just two, and I agree—these are two players who could have the biggest impact.

Both former Madrid players who where not given enough credit when they were here, while many might regret the sales, both seem to be happy and thriving at their new clubs.
