Florida Gator Football: 2010 Running Backs By Comittee
If you thought the Gators were deep last year at running back, don't look now but this year's crop is the deepest part of the offensive scheme.
Jefrrey Demps, with world class sprinter speed, can bust a move on anyone at anytime. His breakaway speed leaves defenders in the dust. Providing he can stay healthy, he should represent the real staple at running back.
Chirs Rainey has the same speed as Demps, but will most likely be a down-the-field runner with possible some swing passes and or screens. Rainey can catch well out of the backfield as an added weapon.
This should be the year that Emanuel Moody will have the opportunity to break through. Moody has been showing toughness during spring drills and really needs to be that back that can bust into the line and get crucial yards on third and short.
One dude that could see significant time, especially if there are injuries, is Mike Gillislee of Deland, Florida. The UF coaches love this kid and his toughness. Coach Stan Drayton was quoted as saying that "he never hears the kid complain, and he's a tough nut."
One guy who could end up being the best of the bunch over time is Mack Brown, who will likely be red shirted this season due to the talent level at the position. Brown was called a "junior Marshall Faulk" by fellow teammate QB Trey Burton. Some high praise, indeed. Brown was a rivals sixth best in the nation at running back coming out of the state of Georgia.
How Mark Richt let this guy get away is a mystery.
As 2010 unfolds, it will become apparent that this group of backs may be the best combination in the nation. With a solid, explosive running game, the Gators can free up Brantley to toss the ball around the yard. It's clearly not about the QB running like it was with Tim Tebow, albeit very successful.
The times they are a changin' in Gainesville....
