Adding Insult To Catchers' Injuries

I recently listened to a podcast of CBSโ€™s Baseball Prospectus hosted by Joel Hendon. He and Scott White spent ten minutes breaking down the catcher position.

โ€œMy general attitude toward catchers,โ€ said White, is...โ€œbecause they lose the {chance} every other position across the diamond gets to rest their knees and stuff...that....they probably wonโ€™t give you good stats...โ€

I was a bit stunned by this generalization. The fact that catchers have to be โ€œonโ€ without pause during a game, that their bodies take more unrelenting punishment than any other playersโ€™, is one of the reasons I admire them to begin with. These guys deserve praise, not doubt. ย

Hendon and White went on to discuss individual catchers. I waited.

White declared Joe Mauer the best in MLB, โ€œfar ahead of every other catcher. โ€œ I waited.

After assessing two or three more guys, White got around to Jorge Posada. I held my breath. ย

โ€œGreat as he was last yearโ€”he had one of the best seasons of his career,โ€ White began, โ€œit raises a red flag.โ€ Huh? I waited, barely breathing.

White continued: โ€œAt 38 a catcher shouldnโ€™t be able to do that.โ€ Double huh?

Just what is the implication here? Whatโ€™s this โ€œred flagโ€ business? I hope White isnโ€™t implying that Jorge Posada, one of the most respected players in Major League Baseball, did something illegal to keep himself up to speed. Maybe Whiteโ€™s just talking about the โ€œred flagโ€ of superstition, so common in the game, but even that is offensive. Posada is one of those players/people whoโ€™s able to use his long years of experience in the service of improving his game. Heโ€™s always produced well for the Yankees, whether squatting or holding the batโ€”and for this some talking head suspects him of god-only-knows-what!

The whole โ€œanalysisโ€ was a case of literally adding insult to injury: not only does the catching position injure catchers, theyโ€™re now being insulted as inferior players as a result.

So far this season Jorgeโ€™s playing as well as last year. Yes, he was out for a few days due to a calf injury โ€“ but he never even went on the DL for it. White said he thinks the Yankees ought to be worried about Jorge, and predicted heโ€™ll have a bad season. Thankyouverymuch, Mr. White, but I wouldnโ€™t bet the farm on that.
