New NBA Free-Throw Rule Explained

The Fives: April 5th, 2010

Jay McAnanyApr 5, 2010

Five observations from Sunday in sports…

1.    Just when you thought it was going to be a quiet off-season for the Washington Redskins, they make a move for a quarterback in their own division.  Well, Redskins camp should be interesting for Washington’s offense (Can Shanahan and McNabb get along?  Who gets the starting RB job: Portis, Johnson, or Parker?)

2.    Another night at the office for the Connecticut women.  It's pretty amazing when you think about the unseen factor of these blowouts is just how good the Huskies play defense.  That might be the main reason why they have been so dominant this season.

3.    It’s nice to have baseball back.  Of course, if anyone was hearty enough to actually stay up for the whole thing.  Why does it seem every time the Red Sox and Yankees play, it takes a minimum of three and a half hours?

4.    The Spurs finally lock up a playoff berth.  This really might be the last go around for the current Spurs, but I just can’t see them making a deep playoff run.  I think age has finally caught up to a lot of guys on that squad.

5.    Late last night, Don Nelson tied Lenny Wilkens for most coaching victories in NBA history.  It just goes to show that if you can get a foot in the door in the NBA coaching circle, you can make a long career out of it.

Five top performances from Sunday…

1.    LeBron James, Cavaliers F:   42 pts, 7 reb, 9ast in CLE’s 117-113 loss to BOS

2.    Nnemkadi Ogwumike, Stanford F:   38 pts, 16 rebs in Stanford’s 73-66 National Semifinal win over Oklahoma

3.    Maya Moore, Connecticut G:   34 pts, 12 rebs in Connecticut's 70-50 National Semifinal win over Baylor

4.    Dustin Pedroia, Red Sox 2B:   2-4 with a HR and 3 RBI's in BOS's 9-7 win over NYY

5.    Peter Mueller: Avalanche RW:   2 G and an assist in COL’s 5-4 OT win over SJ

Five games to watch on Monday…

1.    MLB:   Phillies at Nationals, 1:00 PM (Roy Halladay’s first start as a Phillie)

2.    MLB:   Marlins at Mets, 1:00 PM (Good pitching matchup: Josh Johnson vs. Johan Santana)

3.    NHL:   Bruins at Capitals, 7:00 PM Versus (Boston trying to solidify a playoff spot)

4.    NCAA National Championship:   Butler vs. Duke, 9:00 PM CBS

5.    MLB:   Twins at Angels, 10:00 PM ESPN2 (Division favorites square off to start their seasons)
