Warriors' James Wiseman Voices Support for Klay Thompson After Leg Injury
On a night meant to celebrate his becoming an NBA player, center James Wiseman couldn't help but feel for one of his new teammates, Klay Thompson as the Golden State Warriors await the news on the sharpshooter's latest leg injury.
The Warriors selected Wiseman with the No. 2 overall pick only an hour after learning Thompson had injured his right leg as he worked back from an ACL tear on his left leg.
"As soon as I seen [the news], it was kind of down for me, like emotionally," Wiseman told reporters. "But the team, we got his back no matter what and he's going to be in great recovery. All prayers be to Klay, my teammate, and he's going to be just fine."
The Warriors were reportedly eyeing Wiseman before Thompson's injury on Wednesday but news of the guard's status briefly cast some doubt on those plans.
Thompson missed the entire 2019-20 season while rehabbing his knee and had finally been cleared to return to the court in recent months. On September 25, he joined a number of his Warriors teammates inside the "Dubble" for a minicamp in preparation for the 2020-21 season.
Those plans are now on hold.
ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported the severity of the injury is still unclear while Shams Charania of Stadium and The Athletic noted Thompson was unable to place any weight on his leg and is awaiting test results.
In the short-term, the Warriors turned their focus to Wiseman.
The Memphis product gives Golden State a bonafide big man who was at one point considered the top player in college basketball last year.
Whether or not he'll get to take the floor with Thompson this season remains to be seen.
