Joe Maddon Offers Bizarre Reasoning for Cubs New 'Own It Now' Slogan

Adam WellsFeb 12, 2019

If Joe Maddon hoped to carve out a career in the marketing business, he should stick to his day job as manager of the Chicago Cubs.

On the Cubs' first official day of spring training Tuesday, Maddon felt compelled to trot out a new slogan for his team in 2019.

"Own it now," Maddon told reporters. "A big part of our success this year is going to be the fact that we own each moment. And if you take the word 'now' and turn it around, it becomes 'won.'"

To Maddon's credit, he's had successful slogans in the past. The 65-year-old created a modern masterpiece with "Try Not to Suck" in 2016 that helped catapult the Cubs to their first World Series title in 108 years.

Even last year's motto of "Everybody In" would have been fine to bring back as the Cubs try to recapture the National League Central.

Instead, Maddon is trying to get his team and fan base excited because "won" is the inverse of "now."

Good luck, Cubs.
