Eintracht Frankfurt Midfielder Omar Mascarell Expecting Real Madrid Return

Rory MarsdenMay 18, 2018

Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Omar Mascarell looks set to return to Real Madrid this summer, but he has said he is not sure what his future holds.

The Spaniard, who has made 36 Bundesliga appearances in two seasons in Frankfurt, has confirmed Real will activate his buy-back clause, per EFE (h/t Marca): "The buy-back option is going to be exercised, but I do not know what will happen to my future. I think Real Madrid want me to complete pre-season with them. I think they are interested in keeping me, but I would like to continue growing and gaining experience, so my thinking is to stay in Germany if I have to leave Real Madrid."

The 25-year-old came through the youth system at Real and played for their Castilla side before making one senior appearance in La Liga.

Ahead of departing for Eintracht on a three-year deal in July 2016, he spent time on loan at Derby County and Sporting Gijon.

He has put in some impressive performances for the Bundesliga side and, despite missing much of the 2017-18 season due to an Achilles injury, Real clearly see the value in bringing him back to the club.

They are not necessarily going to re-sign him with a view to embedding him in the first-team, though.

According to Sergio Santos Chozas of AS, his buy-back fee is only €4 million (£3.5 million), and he will be given the pre-season to impress while Casemiro, Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Mateo Kovacic are away at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

If he does not make the grade, Real then plan to ship him out again, and they hope to make back up to four times his buy-back fee, per Chozas.

Clearly his preference in the latter scenario would be to return to the Bundesliga.

Mascarell will likely not be short of suitors, as he has proved at Eintracht to be an able deep-lying midfielder with a fine passing range and excellent defensive acumen.

Despite his ability, it would be no surprise if he failed to force his way into the first-team at Real, where the likes of Kovacic and Daniel Ceballos struggle to get much game time due to Modric and Kroos' excellence.
