Stephen Curry Talks 'Hamptons 5' Starting Lineup After Warriors' Game 4 Win
The Golden State Warriors went with arguably their best lineup to start Game 4 against the New Orleans Pelicans, and it led to a 118-92 win Sunday. Stephen Curry saw the difference right out of the gate, via NBA TV:
Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Kevin Durant started as normal, but Andre Iguodala replaced JaVale McGee from Game 3. This group has been referred to as the "Hamptons 5" because Curry, Green, Thompson and Iguodala traveled to the Hamptons (where Durant was taking free-agency pitches) to help convince Durant to sign with the team before last season.
"I still am amused we just matter-of-factly call them 'The Hamptons 5,'" head coach Steve Kerr joked after the game, per Ben Golliver of Sports Illustrated.
Regardless of the name, the five players are dominant when they play together.
In Sunday's game, all five starters were at least plus-20 on the court, while no one on the bench was better than plus-five.
The team is able to spread the floor with five shooters in a small-ball attack, while the defense more than holds its own with above-average defenders at almost every position.
"The versatility of that lineup and everybody is a playmaker and defensively we're flying around," Curry said.
The most common reason that this lineup doesn't start is that Kerr prefers having Iguodala come off the bench. Iguodala was a reserve for 57 of his 64 regular-season games this year, and while he has started eight of the nine postseason games, Curry missed the team's first six playoff games with an MCL injury.
Curry's injury and others also limited the lineup's time on the court in the regular season. Per Basketball Reference, the group only played 127 minutes and nine seconds together all year, nearly 100 fewer minutes compared to last season (224 minutes, 36 seconds).
After the success in Game 4, however, it would be a surprise if we don't see more of this lineup starting in the postseason.
