James DudkoApr 24, 2018

Cameron Jerome scored twice and Matej Vydra added another as Derby County moved back into the Championship play-off places after beating automatic promotion-chasing Cardiff City 3-1 at Pride Park Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Bluebirds' defeat means Fulham now have automatic promotion to the Premier League in their sights, as they trail the second-placed Welsh club by just one point with two games remaining.

Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest piled relegation pressure on Barnsley after a 3-0 win at the City Ground with goals from Lee Tomlin, Ben Brereton and Apostolos Vellios.

The Bluebirds were ahead on 28 minutes when Callum Paterson finished past Scott Carson. Cardiff's promotion hopes were looking good until the 69th minute, when a scramble in the box ended with Jerome shooting low to equalise.

Derby's night got even better 13 minutes later when the talented Vydra slammed a shot into the top corner after a mix-up in the visitors' defence. It brought up 20 league goals for the Czech Republic striker who has the quality to thrive a level above.

Vydra's goal came during what was a frantic second half, full of attacking intent. Joshua Murray of the Burton Mail found the match engaging enough to even distract from a more high-profile tie on the night:

Meanwhile, Tom Coleman of WalesOnline expressed his disappointment at seeing Cardiff let a lead slip:

Further misery was in store when Jerome completed his brace in the final minute to add some gloss to the scoreline for Derby. More than just gloss, though, these goals have put manager Gary Rowett's team into the play-off mix at the business end of the season.

As for Cardiff, Coleman's annoyance is understandable since the Bluebirds still need six points to guarantee automatic promotion along with champions Wolverhampton Wanderers. The fact manager Neil Warnock's men will try to get those points from tough trips to Hull City and Middlesbrough means third-placed Fulham were the big winners on the night.

Barnsley are still two points clear of safety after being overrun by Forest. Tomlin opened the scoring with a typically classy finish from outside the box on 26 minutes.

The intelligent forward played in Brereton to make it two nine minutes before the break. It took the home side until the final minute to add a third, with Vellios stroking in a left-footed shot.

Cardiff could be third by the time their game at Hull gets underway on Saturday, with Fulham hosting relegated Sunderland a day before.

Meanwhile, Derby's visit to fourth-placed Aston Villa could have huge implications on the play-off picture, with Millwall ready to take advantage of any slip from the Rams.
