The Premier League's top clubs and their top scorers fell well short of the expectations on Sunday, as both Arsenal and Manchester United lost to teams below them in the standings.

United's 1-0 loss to West Bromwich Albion handed rivals Manchester City the title, while Newcastle United shocked the Gunners 2-1 at St James' Park, their fourth win in a row.

Recap

Jay Rodriguez scored the only goal at Old Trafford to seal the title race, bringing an end to a disappointing challenge from the Red Devils.

United came back from a two-goal deficit against their rivals to prolong the race last week, but Sunday's loss may have been just as bad a way to hand them the title:

United had no real plan in attack, and their top goalscorers all came out flat. Romelu Lukaku went closest to scoring, but Ben Foster saved his good header and wasn't kept busy otherwise.

For the Baggies, the win reignited their hopes of surviving the drop, although those hopes remain slim. Their next task will be a daunting match against an in-form Liverpool side.

Alexandre Lacazette did get on the board for the Gunners, but they too suffered a disappointing loss against a team they were expected to beat.

The 2-1 defeat against Newcastle was a source of much hilarity on social media:

Ayoze Perez and Matt Ritchie took care of the scoring for the Magpies, who have won four in a row and are building some nice momentum heading into the summer transfer window.

Arsenal's main focus is on the UEFA Europa League, and it showed on Sunday, but the loss is still a blow to their momentum ahead of the showdown with Atletico Madrid. They'll have one more chance against West Ham United to get back on track before the Spaniards come to London on April 26.
