Chaos at Sporting
To say Portuguese club Sporting have had a less-than-ideal preparation for Thursday's meeting with Atletico would be an understatement:
Lucas Sposito broke down the current situation in Lisbon for Sport Witness, describing how club president Bruno de Carvalho criticised his players after the defeat in the first leg, leading to retaliatory posts on social media by a large portion of the squad.
De Carvalho did not appreciate the action of the players, leading to the avalanche of suspensions. The sanctions were eventually lifted before Sunday's match against Pacos de Ferreira, which the team won, but the drama didn't end there:
It's fair to question how motivated the players will be for this match given the circumstances, and with Atletico in fine form―they held Real Madrid to a draw at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday―it's hard to see Sporting overcoming so many issues and the two-goal deficit from the first leg.
Slumping Salzburg
Salzburg didn't have the best run-in for Thursday's first leg, even if their weekend was a lot less spectacular than Sporting's.
The Austrian Bundesliga leaders suffered a shock loss at the hands of LASK Linz, although it didn't hurt them in the standings, as Sturm Graz also lost.
Salzburg have been in dominant form for most of the season, but they've won just two of their last six matches across all competitions.
Lazio, meanwhile, grabbed a win at Udinese in Serie A on Sunday and are unbeaten in their last seven outings, including the 4-2 win over Salzburg in the first leg.
Here are the highlights from their latest win:
Lazio's best chance of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League likely comes through Serie A, where they are locked in a tight battle with AC Milan and AS Roma for the third and fourth ticket for the tournament.
They won't take their eye off the Europa League, though, and their good form makes them serious contenders for the title.
