Manchester City vs. Liverpool: Preview, Live Stream, TV Info for UCL Match

Gianni VerschuerenApr 8, 2018

Liverpool will defend their three-goal advantage in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final against Manchester City on Tuesday.

The Reds put on a show in the first leg with a 3-0 win and will like their chances of advancing, knowing a single away goal could be deadly.

Both sides rested some starters on Saturday and failed to win in the Premier League as a result, but it will all be worth it if they can come through on Tuesday.

Manchester City

The Citizens missed out on the opportunity to win the Premier League title on Saturday, giving up a two-goal advantage and losing the derby to Manchester United.

Per Sky Sports Statto, it brought an end to a remarkable run for manager Pep Guardiola:

Guardiola didn't start Kevin De Bruyne, Gabriel Jesus or Kyle Walker―even though Jesus and De Bruyne were introduced at a later point. Sergio Aguero also featured from the bench and could be in line to start on Tuesday.

City will need to be at their best defensively to avoid conceding an away goal, as the Reds haven't been held scoreless by an opponent since the 0-0 draw against FC Porto early in March. Everton didn't concede on Saturday, but they didn't have to face Mohamed Salah.

Guardiola's troops have the ability to completely smother opponents in midfield, but the Reds' raw athleticism and ability on the counter means they'll still be a threat, even without a lot of possession.

Liverpool

Neither Salah nor Roberto Firmino made the starting XI for the 0-0 draw against Everton, and the latter only played a little over 15 minutes in the contest. Without those two, Liverpool created few chances and couldn't take any advantage of going up against one of the Premier League's worst defences.

Sports writer Karl Matchett was not impressed by the Toffees:

Georginio Wijnaldum put together a solid outing in the draw, which is an encouraging sight for manager Jurgen Klopp. The Reds will face City without the injured Emre Can or the suspended Jordan Henderson, severely weakening the midfield.

Against De Bruyne, David Silva and Fernandinho―or Ilkay Gundogan, who got a goal in Saturday's contest―the Dutchman will have his hands full. Limiting the former's space when he has the ball in particular will be key, as the Belgian is among the best creators in the sport.

Prediction

City have enjoyed a phenomenal season, and there are few clubs in Europe who would stand a better chance of completing an unlikely comeback like this one. But even for Guardiola's troops, a three-goal deficit seems just about insurmountable.

The Reds have too much scoring potential not to find at least one goal at the Etihad Stadium, and in that case, the Sky Blues would need a scenario close to Barcelona's infamous comeback against Paris Saint-Germain in 2017.

That came to be after PSG won the first leg 4-0 at home, so Guardiola's former club proved it is possible.

Final score: City 3-1 Liverpool
