Match Preview

Germany will head to the 2018 World Cup in Russia as one of the favourites, as they are the top-ranked team in the world, according to the latest FIFA rankings.

Joachim Low's side breezed through qualification, winning all 10 games and scoring 43 goals along the way. Germany have arguably the strongest squad in the competition, and their strength in depth is highlighted by Fox Soccer's Stuart Holden:

However, that causes problems and will give Low a selection headache, according to general manager Oliver Bierhoff:

The Germans also possess an excellent record against Spain, per Opta:

Spain also went through the qualification process unbeaten with nine wins and a draw from their 10 games.

Manager Julen Lopetegui also has a talented squad to pick from and was able to leave out players such as Chelsea duo Alvaro Morata and Cesc Fabregas. Spain confirmed their squad via Twitter:

Morata appears to have paid the price for some poor recent form and strong competition for places with in-form strikers Diego Costa, Iago Aspas, Lucas Vazquez and Rodrigo Moreno all having made the squad.

There is also a strong Real Madrid influence with the club having supplied six players. Sergio Ramos captains the team and youngsters Isco and Marco Asensio have become key players for the national side under Lopetegui.

Friday's game promises to be an intriguing contest between two quality sides, although the hosts do look to have more options and, with home advantage, may just have the edge.
