USWNT Seek to Build on Strong Start

The match between the United States and Germany—the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the world, according to FIFA—always felt like the most important at the SheBelieves Cup.
The United States were able to rise to the challenge against their great rivals too, with a 17th-minute goal from Megan Rapinoe proving to be the difference between the sides.
As we can see, courtesy of the team's Twitter account, the 32-year-old showcased tremendous anticipation to break the deadlock:
It wasn't a vintage performance from Jill Ellis' team, as the conditions made it difficult for the team to get the ball down and put their passing patterns together.
However, the coach would have been pleased with the defensive determination her players showcased to keep out an excellent Germany attack—especially given the relatively inexperienced Taylor Smith, Tierna Davidson and Abby Dahlkemper ensured they were stood up and counted.
"It is about those players getting experience against some of the best players in the world," Ellis said thereafter, per Graham Hays of ESPNW. "And add that to the conditions, I think it was just a great challenge that you can't replicate."
Journalist Caitlin Murray commented on how secure the team looked as a unit:
Against France, Ellis will want to see the attacking players influence the game a little more given how vulnerable they looked at the back against England.
The Lionesses were happy to surrender possession and spring into action when they won the ball back, exposing weak points throughout France's back line. Manager Corinne Diacre will need to ensure her players are a much more cohesive unit against the world champions.

As journalist Richard Laverty noted during their 4-1 loss to England, France lacked any sort of identity when they took to the field in Columbus:
"Diacre is either a poor coach or has underestimated England by leaving some players on the bench. This is too easy and not what you expect of France, even under Echouafni they had quality.

Given there are just three days between fixtures at the SheBelieves Cup, there's not much time to right the wrongs that blighted France in their first match.
The U.S., by contrast, will feel emboldened by their win. Beating Germany is never easy, and while supporters love to see incisive and inventive attacking football, there's something galvanising about grinding out a win.
With that in mind, as well as some improved conditions, we are likely to see a much more fluid showing from the USWNT. That spells bad news for France, whose chances of defending their crown are likely to be over come Sunday evening.
Prediction: United States 3-1 France
