National Signing Day 2018: Top Uncommitted Recruits to Watch

Joe TanseyFeb 3, 2018

Wednesday is the most important day on the college football calendar since the CFB National Championship.

The remaining unsigned players in the recruiting class of 2018 will make their college choices in a variety of different manners over the course of the day.

The most-coveted prospect left on the board is the son of a former NFL defensive back, who will send waves throughout the college football landscape with his selection.

While there is a plethora of uncommitted players who could alter a program's recruiting class, we decided to focus in on four of the biggest decisions being made on Wednesday.

Patrick Surtain Jr., CB, American Heritage (Plantation, Florida)

The top remaining prospect on the board is expected to be in the purple and gold of LSU this fall.

The Tigers have been at the front of the race for defensive back Patrick Surtain Jr. for quite some time, even with Alabama involved and Miami (FL) making a late push to keep the son of former NFL defensive back Patrick Surtain at home.

If he chooses LSU like many expect him to, Surtain will join Kelvin Joseph as the only two corners committed to Ed Orgeron's program in the class of 2018.

According to SEC Country's Sam Spiegelman, the Tigers are already putting together game plans for the secondary with Surtain's commitment in mind.

Surtain is set to visit the Hurricanes this weekend, per ESPN's Tom VanHaaren, but even if Miami (FL) head coach Mark Richt has a successful visit with Surtain, LSU is still way out in front due to the family ties the defensive back has to Louisiana.

Prediction: LSU

Tyson Campbell, CB, American Heritage (Plantation, Florida)

As hard as it is to believe, there's another corner from American Heritage High who is garnering close the same amount of attention as Surtain.

Tyson Campbell is one of a few American Heritage players who will be on Miami's campus this weekend, but there's a better chance for the Hurricanes to land him than Surtain, although it's still considered a long shot.

Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee received official visits from Campbell in January, with the Bulldogs looking like the favorite at the moment.

Kirby Smart has put together a monster class at Georgia, and Campbell would be the third corner to sign with the Bulldogs.

Alabama, who is in the market for almost every remaining available defensive back, has three corners already committed, while the Volunteers need to do work at the position.

Unless Miami makes a serious late push for Campbell, expect his decision to come down to Georgia and Alabama.

Prediction: Georgia

Devon Williams, WR, Antelope Valley (Lancaster, California)

Oregon and USC are the finalists for the signature of wide receiver Devon Williams, per Kevin Wade of 247 Sports.

The Ducks appear to be the front-runners for the California native, who made a recent visit to Eugene, Oregon, and attended the Las Vegas Bowl in December.

Securing Williams' commitment would complete a strong finish to recruiting the class of 2018 for the Ducks, who recently received a commitment from wide receiver Jalen Hall.

Williams told ESPN's Kyle Bonagura that the Ducks and Trojans are "pretty much 50-50," but a commitment to USC would cause some shock in the Pacific Northwest.

If Williams opts to play his college football in southern California, he'd join five-star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and reclassified quarterback J.T. Daniels as stars of the Trojans' recruiting class.

Prediction: Oregon

Jacob Copeland, WR, Escambia (Pensacola, Florida)

SEC teams have been circling around wide receiver Jacob Copeland for quite some time, and Florida will have the opportunity to make the last impression on the Florida native this weekend, as the prospect confirmed on Twitter.

Alabama and Tennessee have also displayed a good amount of interest in Copeland, and it looks like all three schools are in the mix heading into Signing Day.

Alabama is the established power of the trio, but Florida's Dan Mullen and Tennessee's Jeremy Pruitt have hit the recruiting trail hard since taking over at their respective schools.

The Gators made a splash during December's signing day, as quarterback Emory Jones flipped from Ohio State, and they could be poised to make even more noise on Wednesday.

Another offensive capture by Mullen, who is regarded as one of the top offensive coaches in the nation, would finish off a strong first two months in office for the former Mississippi State coach.

Alabama, who seems to be in the mix for almost every major uncommitted player, is looking for a nice close to the class of 2018 itself, while the Volunteers are trying to land their third wide receiver commit.

Prediction: Florida
