Sunday Recap

Tottenham took on Southampton without goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and Christian Eriksen due to illness. Sky Sports Statto shared the two teams:

Both teams started brightly with Southampton looking particularly strong down their left side against Serge Aurier at right-back. The hosts exploited that fully after just 16 minutes as they took the lead.

Dusan Tadic slipped the ball through to Ryan Bertrand, who raced down the left flank before firing in a strong cross that a diving Sanchez touched past his own goalkeeper, Michel Vorm.

Football writer Raj Bains said the defender was looking nervous:

However, Spurs came roaring back with Eric Dier hitting the post before Kane equalised as he headed home a corner. Opta showed how quickly the visitors responded to going behind:

Spurs looked the more dangerous team for the rest of the first half but badly lacked the creativity of the missing Eriksen, particularly with Dele Alli and Heung-Min Son unusually quiet and not at their best.

The second half was a similar story with Spurs reduced to shots from range and lacking composure and quality in midfield. Seeking more inspiration, manager Mauricio Pochettino sent on Erik Lamela for the ineffective Son, a substitution that did not go down well with supporters, per The Independent's Jack Pitt-Brooke:

Lamela did have a chance to win it late on after Spurs worked the ball into the penalty area but could only prod the ball wide from close range. The action then switched straight to the other end with Tadic crossing for an unmarked Michael Obafemi, but the substitute could not get a shot on target.

With time running out, Sofiane Boufal then had a shot blocked as Southampton threatened to nick the win, before Kane dragged a shot just wide with seconds of normal time remaining.

The point does little for either team as Southampton remain in the relegation zone, while Spurs stay fifth and will lose further ground on the top four should Liverpool beat bottom side Swansea City on Monday.

Pochettino's men also now hit a tough run of fixtures with their next three Premier League games against Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal before a UEFA Champions League clash with Juventus.
