EPL Results: Saturday's Week 24 Scores, Updated 2018 Premier League Table

James DudkoJan 20, 2018

Manchester City stayed 12 points clear at the top of the Premier League after beating struggling Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday. A Sergio Aguero hat-trick put the leaders in a comfortable position on a day when their nearest rivals all won.

Manchester United kept the pressure on City in the title race by earning a hard-fought victory at Burnley. United's win came after Chelsea had hit four past Brighton & Hove Albion to stake a claim for second place.

There was good news for Arsenal in the fight for a top-four finish, as the Gunners thrashed Crystal Palace 4-1 at home to earn their first win of 2018. It means Arsenal are just five points off the UEFA Champions League places, but they have played a game more than Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool.

Aguero got a head to a Kevin De Bruyne free-kick to settle City's nerves and undermine what had been a solid showing defensively from the Magpies. The same player scored from the spot in the second half to give the Citizens a seemingly unassailable lead.

Yet Newcastle soon hit back after a long ball somehow found its way to Jacob Murphy, who ran clean through and finished coolly.

Young midfielder Oleksandr Zinchenko was playing left-back for City, and the 21-year-old was culpable for the goal, according to James Robson of the Manchester Evening News:

City's nerves were obvious after Murphy's goal, but Aguero made the points safe by netting his third following superb work from Leroy Sane.

United left Turf Moor with three precious points earlier in the day thanks to Anthony Martial's terrific goal. The Frenchman is in fine form and curled a shot in off the bar to finally break Burnley's defensive resolve nine minutes after the break.

Martial got the goal, but it was created by excellent work from Romelu Lukaku. The centre-forward has established a niche as a supplier, per BBC Match of the Day:

United are doing all they can to keep the title race alive, despite City's healthy advantage.

Arsenal needed just 22 minutes to breach the Palace defence four times at the Emirates Stadium. Returning defender Nacho Monreal was at the heart of the early onslaught, heading in a Granit Xhaka corner before teeing up Alex Iwobi to double the Gunners' lead.

Less than three minutes later, Monreal's knockdown from another corner let centre-back Laurent Koscielny make it 3-0.

Monreal was playing left-back, as manager Arsene Wenger returned to a back four. Sadly, Monreal had to be substituted in the first half, despite only just returning from injury. Ainsley Maitland-Niles replaced the Spaniard, but the Gunners kept their shape.

One of the benefits of Wenger reverting to a back four was an extra man in midfield. He put Xhaka and Mohammed Elneny at the base and let Jack Wilshere push further forward to combine with Mesut Ozil and Iwobi.

All three of Arsenal's playmakers were involved in the fourth goal. A one-two between Ozil and Iwobi ended with the former releasing Wilshere, who returned the ball to the German in the box.

Ozil instantly produced a deft backheel to let Alexandre Lacazette end a lengthy scoring drought, per Squawka Football:

Supplying goals has been the norm for Ozil since he signed for Arsenal in 2013:

To their credit, the visitors tightened up considerably after the break. Palace didn't concede again and even scored a consolation courtesy of Luka Milivojevic.

Arsenal are still outsiders to reach the top four, given the form of Liverpool and Spurs. Yet this result and performance should act as a huge confidence boost for a side still capable of turning on the style against opponents.

Earlier, it was Chelsea who were in the groove as Hazard and Co. ran riot at the Amex Stadium. The classy No. 10 scored the visitors' first, before Willian made it 2-0 with barely six minutes on the clock.

Both goals meant career landmarks for each player, according to Sky Sports Statto:

Hazard got a second late on, before Victor Moses capped the scoring a minute from time after an astute pass from substitute Charly Musonda. Chelsea have padded their goal difference, a crucial factor as they try to hold off free-scoring Liverpool in the fight for third.

Leicester moved ahead of Burnley after familiar stars Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez got among the goals at the King Power Stadium. Vardy slotted in a penalty during the first half, while Mahrez found the net deep into stoppage time.

The Foxes aren't going to match their exploits from two seasons ago when they won the title. Yet this team will remain a strong contender for the European places as long as Vardy and Mahrez are around.

While Leicester moved up, Everton dropped to ninth after a tame stalemate at home to relegation-threatened West Bromwich Albion at home. Jay Rodriguez put the Baggies in front, but Toffees substitute Oumar Niasse rescued a point less than a minute after coming off the bench.

Former Arsenal man Theo Walcott, who was making his Everton debut, teed up Niasse.

Walcott's positive start and the match itself were overshadowed by a gruesome injury suffered by James McCarthy. The club confirmed the midfielder broke his leg in two places following a challenge with Salomon Rondon:

There was another 1-1 draw played out between West Ham and Bournemouth. The Cherries took the lead through Ryan Fraser, but Javier Hernandez equalised for the hosts soon after.

An away point was welcome for the Cherries, who built on last week's 2-1 win over Arsenal to move four points clear of the bottom three.

Stoke City also earned respite from relegation worries after a 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town in new manager Paul Lambert's first game in charge. Goals from Joe Allen and Mame Biram Diouf helped the Potters climb out of the drop zone.

There is also still breathing space at the top, even if City are starting to look less convincing, while United remain determined to keep the fight going.
