Sunday Recap
Barcelona and Valencia played out an entertaining first half at Mestalla, and although there were no goals, there was one huge talking point.
A Lionel Messi shot was fumbled over the line by goalkeeper Neto, but the goal was not given by the match officials.
Marca's English Twitter account showed the ball had crossed the line:
Barcelona protested long and hard to the officials, but to no avail, while Valencia simply kept on playing and carved out a chance, with Simone Zaza firing just wide.
Football journalist Graham Hunter felt it was Barca's best 45 minutes of the season:
Valencia improved after the break as an attacking force and went ahead just on the hour mark.
Goncalo Guedes found Jose Luis Gaya on the overlap, and his cross was tapped home by Rodrigo.
The goal visibly lifted Valencia against a tiring Barca, who were struggling to create many clear-cut chances.
However, Ernesto Valverde has made Barca hard to beat, and they managed to find an equaliser late on as Alba scored against his former club with just eight minutes of normal time remaining.
Messi spotted the full-back racing into the box and dinked a beautiful ball for Alba to volley past Neto and make it 1-1.
Football writer Sid Lowe was impressed by both the assist and the finish:
It was an impressive comeback from the league leaders, who still look short on attacking flair but departed with their four-point lead intact—although the game will probably be remembered more for the goal that wasn't given.
Sevilla, fresh from their thrilling 3-3 UEFA Champions League draw with Liverpool on Tuesday, went behind after yet another goal from Cedric Bakambu.
The striker scored his ninth La Liga goal of the season in the 19th minute, firing home from inside the box to put the hosts ahead.
A quick break saw Carlos Bacca double Villarreal's lead in the second half before Sevilla hit back with two quick goals.
First, defender Clement Lenglet headed home Ever Banega's cross, and then a minute later, Franco Vazquez fired them level.
There was more drama to follow as a foul on Gabriel Mercado handed Sevilla a penalty, and Ruiz was sent off. Banega made no mistake from the spot.
Opta showed just how good Eduardo Berizzo's side are after half-time in games:
Sevilla went one better than midweek, when they could only draw with Liverpool from 3-0 down. This time they took all three points and showed once again their incredible fighting spirit.
The result keeps Sevilla in fifth place, two points behind Real Madrid and now four clear of Villarreal in sixth.
Sociedad are one place further back in seventh after a 2-2 draw with Las Palmas, with Adnan Januzaj impressing for the hosts.
The former Manchester United man assisted Willian Jose for his side's first goal before scoring the second.
He has become a crucial figure for his club already, according to Spanish football journalist David Cartlidge:
Sunday's only other fixture saw Athletic Bilbao maintain their disappointing form with a 2-2 draw at Deportivo La Coruna.
Opta show just how poor a run the club is on this season:
The result does little for either team, as Deportivo remain a place above the bottom three and Athletic are just a point better off.
