NBA Free Agency: Latest Rumors, Predictions on Derrick Rose, Jae Crowder, More
The leaguewide moratorium is history, Gordon Hayward is off the board, and free-agent deals in the NBA are now being reported left and right.
And even with most of the big dominos already tipped, there are still a few more that could go a long way toward determining the winners of the summer of the 2017.
Among those whose fates still need to be decided is former MVP Derrick Rose, a number of Boston Celtics who could be on the move to make way for Hayward, and Otto Porter, a restricted free agent who signed a max offer sheet with the Brooklyn Nets.
Where will they all end up? A look at the rumor mill provides clues.
Derrick Rose
With Tim Hardaway Jr. signing a four-year, $71 million offer sheet with the New York Knicks, it looks like Rose's days in the Big Apple are behind him.
In fact, ESPN's Bobby Marks tweeted, "New York will need to renounce the $29.7M FA cap hold of Derrick Rose to sign Tim Hardaway Jr. with room."
That means Rose may start getting serious with some other suitors, and that includes the Dallas Mavericks, according to the New York Post's Marc Berman:
Dallas coach Rick Carlisle is one of the best in the league, but his track record with point guards is up. For every J.J. Barea success story, there seems to be a Rajon Rondo.
And with the Mavericks finally in a good position for a traditional rebuild, signing an injury-prone and inefficient 1 to take any on-court development minutes from rookie Dennis Smith is shortsighted.
Prediction: Rose signs elsewhere.
Celtics Sign-and-Trade?
Hayward is on his way to Boston. That much we know. But the Celtics don't have enough cap space to complete the max deal without shedding some salary.
Earlier in the week, reports had the Cs engaged with Hayward's former team, the Utah Jazz, on a possible sign-and-trade that would send Jae Crowder back.
According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, those talks have stalled:
"Sources: Boston, Utah sign-and-trade talks dormant since AM. Celtics engaged throughout NBA on Avery Bradley, Marcus Smart and Jae Crowder.
— Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) July 7, 2017"
Crowder would certainly ease the pain of losing Hayward a bit. He's not as productive, but he did top Hayward last season in a number of metrics, including True Shooting Percentage, rebounding, steal and block percentage, and Defensive Box Plus-Minus, per Basketball Reference.
The problem, of course, is that Utah isn't the only team interested. As Woj noted, Boston's engaged with teams all over the league, which makes sense, given Crowder's ridiculously cost-efficient contract. The 26-year old is under contract through 2019-20 on a contract that will never pay him more than $8 million a year.
Unless Utah is willing to part with a young player like Dante Exum or Donovan Mitchell, in addition to a pick, some other team should be able to pull off a Crowder trade.
Prediction: Utah won't get anything in a sign-and-trade.
Otto Porter
One of the top wings available this summer was Porter, who topped Hayward in ESPN's Real Plus-Minus last season and barely trailed him in Basketball Reference's Box Plus-Minus.
A big part of his spike in these metrics was his improvement as a three-point shooter. He's improved his percentage from downtown in each of his four seasons in the NBA, culminating in 43.4 percent that ranked fourth in the NBA in 2016-17.
As he adds other elements to his game around that steadily developing skill, Porter could grow into one of the league's premier forwards. So, it should come as no surprise that the rebuilding Brooklyn Nets wanted a shot at him.
Unfortunately, for Sean Marks and company, it looks like that shot will be blocked by the Washington Wizards.
Porter is a restricted free agent, meaning Washington can match any offer he receives.
"Now the ball is in Washington’s court," the Washington Post's Tim Bontemps wrote. "And, barring a reversal from what several sources have maintained for months, Porter will return to the Wizards as the team’s highest-paid player next season."
Prediction: The Wizards will match and bring Porter back.
