NCAA Considering Expanding Regular Season to 14-Week Football Schedule

Adam WellsJun 30, 2017

As the NCAA explores possible changes to college football, one topic being discussed is a 14-week schedule.

Per NCAA.com, the Division I Football Oversight Committee is currently examining changing the length of the regular season to 14 weeks.

The NCAA release notes potential reasons for the change include the elimination of two-a-day practices starting this year and how that change impacts the preseason practice schedule for teams.

Bob Bowlsby, the oversight committee chairman, explained the thinking behind the possible schedule change.

“We think there are some ways that the beginning of preseason practice can be kept in August and still meet the appropriate safety considerations," he said.

Any recommendations made by the competition committee will be formally presented to the oversight committee in October.

A full FBS regular-season schedule typically runs 13 weeks, though the Army-Navy game often serves as the official end of the season and is played one week after the conference championship games.
