Fans were not happy when they found out the likes of Christian Pulisic, Geoff Cameron, Tim Howard, Darlington Nagbe and Clint Dempsey were not in the squad, among others. Fox Sports' Ryan Rosenblatt couldn't help himself:
The Stars and Stripes will face Panama in their first Gold Cup match on July 8.
Per Leander Schaerlaeckens of Yahoo Sports, head coach Bruce Arena can make six changes to his squad after the group stages, and he's likely to add some of his top players at that point. For now, he's giving some of the fringe players a chance.
Arena was excited about the makup of the squad: “It’s a good roster with a nice blend of experienced, veteran players and a good group of newcomers as well. There’s good balance at every position, we can play a number of ways. … They have an opportunity to make a statement.”
Dom Dwyer, Kenny Saief, Kelyn Rowe and Cristian are the four debutants in the team, which will chase its sixth Gold Cup title. Mexico have won three of the past four editions of the tournament.
