Robert Horry Says LeBron James Doesn't Need More Titles to Top Michael Jordan

Scott PolacekJun 18, 2017

Michael Jordan won six NBA titles during his career—three more than LeBron James currently owns—but the distinction doesn't matter to Robert Horry.

"That don't matter," Horry said Sunday when discussing the role of rings in arguing who the best player of all time is, per TMZ Sports. "That's why it's a team sport."

When it comes to winning championships, Horry qualifies as an expert. He captured seven rings during his 16-season career and earned the nickname Big Shot Bob because of his propensity for drilling clutch shots in critical postseason moments.

He played for the Los Angeles Lakers, San Antonio Spurs, Houston Rockets and Phoenix Suns, winning three titles with Los Angeles and two each with Houston and San Antonio.

Horry played with some of the best players in NBA history, including Hakeem Olajuwon, Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant and Tim Duncan, and further stressed the inconsequential nature of championships in individual debates:

While many would say rings matter to a degree when arguing between players, it is unfair to fault James for his efforts in his most recent NBA Finals against the Golden State Warriors. He averaged a triple-double in the series (33.6 points, 12.0 rebounds and 10.0 assists) but still didn't have enough firepower on his side to overcome the likes of Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson.

ESPN Stats & Info highlighted the more difficult path James has faced in his eight Finals matchups than Jordan did in his six:

James is only 32 years old and still has time to draw closer to Jordan's six Larry O'Brien Trophies in the latter portion of his career, but things probably won't get any easier if the Warriors continue to be there waiting for him in the Finals.

If Horry is to be believed, even a few more ringless seasons won't damage James' credibility in the constant comparisons to Jordan.
