England Reach Final of 2017 Toulon Tournament with 3-0 Win vs. Scotland

James DudkoJun 8, 2017

England reached the final of the 2017 Toulon Tournament after beating Scotland 3-0 in their semi-final match at the Stade Parsemain in Fos-sur-Mer, France, on Thursday.

Two goals from Harvey Barnes and one from Elliot Embleton put the young Three Lions in the final, as a Scotland side led by precocious playmaker Oliver Burke failed to click on the big stage.

Scotland had restored usually influential skipper Burke to the starting XI, per the Scottish FA:

Meanwhile, England included Leeds United playmaker Ronaldo Vieira at the heart of midfield, per the tournament's official Twitter account:

However, Vieira found himself overshadowed by Leicester City schemer Barnes, who ghosted in from outside the box to put England in front on seven minutes. The goal was just reward for the junior Three Lions' fast start, as well as for Barnes, a precocious talent who has turned heads with his performances at this tournament.

Scotland's day got worse when Rangers academy player Ross McCrorie was forced off with injury a little after the 20-minute mark. He was replaced by Chelsea's Ruben Sammut.

The latter's introduction did little to improve the pace and flow of Scotland's game, with England's back four barely troubled for most of the opening half hour. England might have doubled their lead on the stroke of halftime, but Nottingham Forest defender Joe Worrall crashed his header off the post.

Sunderland's Embleton finally made it 2-0 after 51 minutes when he was played in by Sheffield United's 19-year-old midfield gem David Brooks.

Scotland were floundering, and it didn't help Burke was exerting next-to no influence on the game. A potential talisman, one blessed with exceptional vision and technique, Burke wasn't showing his talent when it mattered most.

Without his quality, the Scots struggled to break down a resolute and disciplined rearguard action from England. The Three Lions were content to stay compact and strike on the break, a threat they carried for much of the last 15 minutes.

Barnes completed his brace late on to add some gloss to the scoreline.

England's players will now turn their focus to the days's second semi-final between Ivory Coast and the Czech Republic.
