C.J. Miles Traded to Raptors for Cory Joseph in Pacers Sign-and-Trade Deal

The Indiana Pacers and Toronto Raptors formally announced a sign-and-trade Friday that will send C.J. Miles to the Raptors and Cory Joseph to the Pacers. 

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski first reported Sunday the teams had reached an agreement and that Miles would sign a three-year, $25 million deal with the Raptors once the trade was complete. 

Miles, 30, declined a $4.8 million player option for the 2017-18 season in late May, a move that signaled his desire to pursue a more lucrative deal on the open market. 

And based on the way he shot the ball last season, that move wasn't exactly a surprise. 

Over the course of 76 total appearances, Miles averaged 10.7 points per game on 43.4 percent shooting from the field, including a career-high 41.3 percent from three. Miles also shot 90.3 percent from the free-throw line. 

As a result, he was one of four qualified players—along with Kyrie Irving, C.J. McCollum and Kyle Korver—to make at least 40 percent of his threes and 90 percent of his attempts from the charity stripe last season, according to Basketball-Reference.com. 

Furthemore, Miles made 42.3 percent of his catch-and-shoot triples—shots that accounted for 56.7 percent of his total attempts from beyond the arc, per NBA.com's player tracking data.   

More than anything, those numbers point to Miles' ability to be an effective scorer without taking up valuable seconds on the shot clock as a ball-handler.

"I'm a guy who will do whatever I'm asked to do for my team," Miles said in April, according to the Indianapolis Star's Nate Taylor. "Don't get me wrong, I don't always like everything. But if my coach, my team, needs me to do something, I'm going to do it with a smile on my face, and I'm going to do it the best that I can." 

Now headed to the Raptors, Miles should continue to embrace that approach as he attempts to keep threes falling as a sharpshooting specialist for a team that finished last season ranked 21st in threes made and 22nd in threes attempted.
