Arsenal vs. Manchester City
Arsenal are in grave danger of finishing outside the top four at the end of the 2016-17 season and missing out on UEFA Champions League football for the first time since 1997.
They are sitting in sixth place in the standings and, should they lose to City on Sunday, could be nine points off fourth spot come the end of the weekend.
The form guide does not make pretty reading for Gunners fans. In their last five league matches, Arsenal have lost to West Brom, Liverpool, Chelsea and Watford and beaten only Hull City in unconvincing fashion.
City, meanwhile, are unbeaten in their last seven in the English top flight, and although they could only draw 1-1 with Liverpool last time out, the Sky Blues put in a performance that greatly pleased their manager, Pep Guardiola, per BBC Sport:
Arsenal and City have both been inconsistent defensively in 2016-17, but the attacking talent set to be on show at the Emirates is remarkable—Alexis Sanchez, Olivier Giroud, Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne, to name a few, are all in fine form.
Goals should be then expected in north London, and despite being at home, the best Arsenal can realistically hope for given their recent form is a draw.
While picking up a point against one of the best teams in the league would hardly be a disaster for the Gunners, it would likely see them drop further back in the top-four race and see further pressure piled on manager Arsene Wenger.
Liverpool vs. Everton
Liverpool's record this season against their top-six rivals has been remarkable, with the Reds' real problem in 2016-17 being taking on clubs who are battling against the drop, per Opta:
As a result, manager Jurgen Klopp will surely be confident in his side's ability to claim all three points against an Everton side on the verge of breaking into the top six.
However, Ronald Koeman's Toffees will also take heart from the fact they have won their last two Premier League outings convincingly against Hull City and West Brom by a combined score of 7-0.
Romelu Lukaku and Ross Barkley are both in decent form and likely relishing the opportunity to take on a Liverpool defence on track to concede more than 45 goals in a league campaign for the fourth season running.
Indeed, the physicality and finishing prowess of Lukaku is sure to cause Liverpool the most problems on Saturday, as the Belgium forward would be a match for almost any centre-back in world football.
Klopp has his own devastating attacking weapons to call upon, but while Sadio Mane continues to be superb, Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho have dropped in form since the turn of the year and could be feeling the effects of their international travails with Brazil, per the Liverpool Echo's James Pearce:
It is sure to be a fascinating occasion given that the Merseyside rivals are arguably closer in quality now than they have been for some time.
Everton have a poor recent history against their neighbours and have not beaten Liverpool since 2010.
While it will be a challenge for the Toffees to end that run at Anfield on Saturday, they have more than enough talent in the side to earn a point from the clash.
