Monday Recap
Coastal Carolina 72, Loyola (Maryland) 63
The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers overcame a sluggish offensive night on the perimeter to advance to the semifinals with a 72-63 win over the Loyola (Maryland) Greyhounds.
The Chanticleers were 3-of-15 from three-point range but made up for it with a potent inside game. Jaylen Shaw (22 points) was the game's leading scorer and hit nine of his 16 two-point field goals. Elijah Wilson (16 points) was also 5-of-8 from inside the arc.
The Greyhounds were also their own worst enemies.
Leading scorer Andre Walker battled foul trouble all night that limited him to 24 minutes on the floor. He turned the ball over seven times as well.
Jarred Jones, who entered Monday night averaging 14.9 points per game, fouled out after scoring eight points and grabbing nine rebounds.
Utah Valley 85, Rice 79
The Utah Valley Wolverines shut down Rice Owls star Marcus Evans, which played a decisive role in their 85-79 win Monday night.
Evans was averaging 19.2 points a game before Rice's defeat. Against Utah Valley, the sophomore guard couldn't find a groove. He finished 5-of-15, including 1-of-7 from beyond the arc, for 13 points.
In addition to the Wolverines' solid work on the defensive end, their bench stepped up in a big way. Reserves Ivory Young and Kenneth Ogbe scored 20 and 17 points apiece, helping to give Utah Valley a 49-19 edge in bench scoring.
UIC 80, George Washington 71
The duo of Tyler Cavanaugh and Yuta Watanabe weren't enough to secure the George Washington Colonials passage to the CBI semifinals. They combined to account for a little over 63 percent of their team's offensive output (45) as George Washington fell 80-71 to the UIC Flames.
The Flames did a great job of negating the Colonials' supporting cast. Cavanaugh and Watanabe shot 17-of-25 between the two. The rest of their team went 10-of-38.
UIC, on the other hand, had four of its five starters score in double figures. Tai Odiase led the way with 23 points. Tarkus Ferguson only scored six points but grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out 12 assists.
Wyoming 72, UMKC 61
Leading by just four points in the final three minutes, the Wyoming Cowboys pulled away from the UMKC Kangaroos to pick up a 72-61 victory in the quarterfinals.
Broderick Newbill made it a 64-60 game with three minutes, 53 seconds remaining. The Kangaroos missed two opportunities to trim the deficit further.
Alan Herndon hit two free throws to give Wyoming a little more breathing room at the 2:15 mark, the Cowboys increased their advantage as UMKC was forced to foul late in the game.
Justin James (21 points, seven rebounds) had a nice game, while Herndon chipped in with 14 points and five boards.
