La Liga Table 2017: Latest Standings Following Friday's Week 28 Results

Rob BlanchetteMar 17, 2017

Las Palmas held onto a 1-0 victory against 10-man Villarreal in La Liga, as the visitors failed to put pressure on the top four sides in the division on Friday.

Victor Ruiz's 19th-minute sending-off seriously damaged the Yellow Submarine, but they fought back in the second half as they attempted to steal a point in Gran Canaria.

Kevin-Prince Boateng gave Los Amarillos the early lead, heading the ball home after just 10 minutes.

The early sending-off was pivotal to the result after Ruiz's cynical foul was punished by the referee for denying Boateng a clear run at goal.

Villarreal quickly had to reorganise, already a goal down after Boateng grabbed the only goal of the game.

Mateo Garcia went close for Las Palmas as he attempted to double the lead, but he was denied by goalkeeper Andres Fernandez.

Boateng continued to be a menace for the hosts as they hunted for a second goal, but Villarreal maintained a defensive action until half-time.

La Liga's official Twitter feed provided the vital statistics during the interval:

The Yellow Submarine picked up their form in the second half, and they took the fight to Las Palmas as the clock ticked away.

Manu Trigueros nearly grabbed the equaliser for the visitors shortly after the hour mark, forcing the hosts to rethink their strategy against a wounded opponent.

Jese replaced Boateng from the bench to add pace and skill to the attack, and the former Real Madrid starlet was a handful for Villarreal late in the match.

However, despite a concerted effort to overcome their numerical disadvantage, the Valencian side could not force the goal they needed to avoid a rare defeat.

Villarreal lost only their sixth game of the La Liga season, remaining four points behind fourth-placed Atletico Madrid.
