Manchester City vs. Liverpool: Team News, Preview, Live Stream and TV Info

Tom SunderlandMar 17, 2017

Manchester City will hope to bounce back from their UEFA Champions League exit when they welcome Liverpool to the Etihad Stadium this Sunday as focus turns back to the Premier League campaign.

The Citizens lost 3-1 in their away trip to AS Monaco in the Champions League round of 16, sealing a 6-6 draw on aggregate but exiting the competition due to the away-goal rule.

An upturn in recent form means Liverpool will present a test for manager Pep Guardiola's side on Sunday, too, with the Reds having now won three of their last four games after a torrid patch of results.

Team News

Guardiola already knows Ilkay Gundogan and Gabriel Jesus won't feature on Sunday due to their longer-term injuries, but the manager may be more hopeful of captain Vincent Kompany making a return to fitness in the near future.

This weekend may be too soon for the centre-back to return, but Kristof Terreur of Belgian newspaperĀ Het Laatste NieuwsĀ noted he travelled with the rest of his squad to Monaco during midweek:

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has more pressing concerns in his squad and will also be without his captain, Jordan Henderson, after confirming the midfielder won't be back until after the upcoming international break.

Fitness analyst Ben Dinnery reported some positive news after Roberto Firmino returned to light training following a groin injury, although Daniel Sturridge looks likely to miss out, per theĀ Liverpool Echo's James Pearce:

That means we could see Divock Origi lead the Reds' line for the second Premier League match in succession, although he is also a doubt after struggling with illness, as confirmed by Klopp.Ā

Preview

Liverpool have all the motivation they need heading into Sunday's tie, and with Tottenham Hotspur set to face Southampton without injured striker Harry Kane on the same day, second place could be theirs for the taking.

Both City and Spurs sit level on 56 points apiece in third and second, respectively, and Opta broke down the ramifications of this weekend's duel, albeit with Liverpool having played one game more than those teams above them:

The Etihad Stadium is a fearsome venue to travel to, but Monaco showed on Wednesday just how vulnerable the Citizens can be, leaking three goals on the French Riviera when defence should have been a priority.

It's poor timing for Liverpool to have quite so many injury concerns in midfield and attack, although Guardiola could be at his weakest after sinking to a new low in European competition, per Squawka:

Despite Wednesday's disappointment, City were undefeated in their 11 matches prior to that loss, even if they managed to keep just one clean sheet in their last seven home matches across all competitions.

After winning only once in their first 10 matches of 2017, Liverpool look to have found their stride at just the right time heading to Manchester, although they're yet to keep their first league clean sheet of the year away from home.
