Monaco vs. Manchester City: Score, Reaction from 2017 Champions League Match

Gianni VerschuerenMar 15, 2017

AS Monaco held on to beat Manchester City during Wednesday's UEFA Champions League action, winning 3-1 at home to take the spectacular tie by an aggregate score of 6-6 thanks to the away-goal rule.

Kylian Mbappe gave the hosts an early lead and Fabinho doubled the advantage midway through the first half, as Monaco dominated the Premier League giants.

The hosts tired in the second half, and Leroy Sane pulled one back for City, but Tiemoue Bakayoko returned the advantage to his team with just over 10 minutes left to play. Despite some late pressure, the Citizens failed to score one more goal.

As promised, City manager Pep Guardiola sent out an attacking XI, with both Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne featuring:

As shared by Squawka Football, the absence of Radamel Falcao was a huge blow for the hosts:

Both teams came out with plenty of attacking intentions, leading to action almost immediately after kick-off.

Mbappe tested goalkeeper Willy Caballero after just seven minutes, and one minute later, the youngster opened the scoring, courtesy of an assist from Bernardo Silva.

Former England international Gary Lineker was impressed by the hosts:

Monaco continued their tremendous pressure and barely let the visitors leave their half. A handful of minutes after the first goal, Bacary Sagna caught Silva, and the Frenchman was immediately booked.

Per Get French Football News, the former Arsenal man was in for a long night:

Mbappe thought he had doubled his tally after 15 minutes, but he was correctly flagged down for offside.

Monaco's pressure was relentless, but arguably the bigger story of the first half was how few chances City managed to put together. The French defence was overrun at the Etihad Stadium, but they were barely troubled before the break.

When De Bruyne did burst through, Andrea Raggi saved the day with a superb tackle.

And that stop proved to be huge, as Monaco struck for a second time on the break, with Benjamin Mendy crossing the ball to Fabinho, who easily converted. Bleacher Report UK couldn't help themselves:

The hosts shut up shop after the second goal and played out the half with a ton of maturity, barely giving away space and conserving their energy with some possession.

City started the second half in far better form, with De Bruyne playing from a deeper position and Sane and Raheem Sterling getting involved.

De Bruyne and Sterling nearly combined to pick out Aguero, but Raggi again saved the day with a last-minute tackle. Sportswriter Jonathan Johnson couldn't believe it:

The Italian made one horrible mistake that should have been punished, as he went to the ground instead of pressuring Sane. The German played in Aguero, who somehow managed to sky the ball from just a few yards out.

Sports writer David Amoyal was not impressed with the hosts' defensive effort:

Danijel Subasic came through with a massive save after 65 minutes, denying Aguero after the Argentinian had been sent through on goal by David Silva. Sane should have laid the ball off to the forward moments later but opted for glory and struck the side netting.

A City goal seemed inevitable as Monaco were visibly tiring and barely hanging on. It took 71 minutes and an injury for Raggi before Sane finally found the breakthrough, smashing home a rebound after Subasic made the initial save.

Johnson thought the stopper should have done better:

But true to their identity, Monaco did not give in and went straight back on the offensive. Sterling got himself booked and suspended for a potential quarter-final tie before Bakayoko powered home a header from a free-kick, returning the advantage to his side.

Bleacher Report UK's Karl Matchett warned his followers the hosts weren't done yet:

Guardiola responded by introducing Kelechi Iheanacho to set up a tense finale. The Citizens didn't play with the intensity one would expect from a team on the brink of elimination, and after three minutes of added time, the Premier League giants were knocked out of the competition.

Per the club's official Twitter account, Guardiola is already thinking of next season:

City will host Liverpool in their next match, while Monaco visit Caen.
