Recap
City had to wait until three minutes before halftime to take the lead against a Sunderland side determined to make life difficult for the visitors at the Stadium of Light. The Black Cats pressed high and used direct passing into the flanks to harass and stretch City.
However, the Citizens' own quality was evident by the way they dominated possession. The men from Manchester recycled the ball slickly among combinations of players rotating positions between the midfield and forward lines.
In particular, Yaya Toure played some fantastic passes behind the Sunderland defence. Yet the hosts managed to stay stubborn at the back, at least until the 42nd minute.
Another typically neat and swift set of passes from back to front led to winger Raheem Sterling teeing up Aguero to tap in. As Sky Sports Statto confirmed, the Argentinian just loves scoring at Sunderland:
City produced one more stylish passing move to open up Sunderland again just after the hour mark. Schemer David Silva played a one-two with Sterling before sliding Sane through on the left.
The German winger finished well, prompting James Robson of the Manchester Evening News to salute his work and bemoan Sunderland's defensive lapses:
City saw out the game with class and composure as they continue to look more and more at ease with manager Pep Guardiola's tactics.
As they often do, Spurs had Harry Kane to thank for delivering when it matters. The England striker twice punctured the Everton defence to stake Tottenham into a two-goal lead after 56 minutes.
Both goals were taken in typically emphatic fashion, with Kane using power and shooting early for the first before taking the second with the coolness of a natural finisher.
Kane's quality has transformed Tottenham's attack since 2014, as numbers from Squawka Football prove:
Spurs ought to have been home and dry at two up, but Everton have the firepower to change games in an instant thanks to Romelu Lukaku. The burly Belgian striker struck nine minutes from time to not only get the Toffees back in it but also set an Everton record for goals in England's top flight, according to Squawka:
To their credit, Spurs responded well to the pressure created by Lukaku's goal. They continued to press intelligently and with intensity, making rapid breaks whenever they pinched possession.
Tottenham merited a third goal, and it came in some style when promising 21-year-old midfielder Harry Winks teased in a free-kick met by Dele Alli's superbly timed run and deft finish.
Alli's goal wasn't the end of the drama, though, as Enner Valencia got another one back for Everton. However, the visitors had left it too late to show the necessary intent in the final third.

Playing a progressive game to maximise their own forward talent hasn't always been a strength for Spurs. Yet manager Mauricio Pohcettino seemed to let Kane, Alli and Co. enjoy more freedom at the Lane this week.
Tottenham's squad is talented enough to pose the only credible challenge to Chelsea, but much will depend on how daring they are willing to be every week. Meanwhile, City may have left themselves too much to do in this season's title race, but the future looks brighter on Guardiola's watch.
