Florida vs. Kentucky: Score and Reaction from 2017 Regular Season

Tim DanielsFeb 25, 2017

No. 11 Kentucky (24-5, 14-2) stands alone atop the SEC standings after scoring a hard-fought 76-66 victory over No. 13 Florida (23-6, 13-3) on Saturday at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky.

The Wildcats, who were without starting point guard De'Aaron Fox due to a knee injury, were led by freshman sensation Malik Monk's 33 points and five assists. Fellow first-year standout Edrice Adebayo added 18 points and 15 rebounds.

Meanwhile, the Gators got solid showings from KeVaughn Allen (24 points) and Devin Robinson (nine points and 11 rebounds) in a losing effort. The team shot just 36.6 percent from the field, including 33.3 percent from beyond the arc, and got out-rebounded 48-30.

Florida scored an impressive 88-66 win over Kentucky in the season's first meeting between the NCAA Tournament-bound squads in early February. Ian Cohen of the Orlando Sentinel noted Gators head coach Mike White fully expected a far more competitive battle in the rematch.

"We're not 22 points better than them," White said Friday. "We know that."

Kentucky and its fans might have endured a case of deja vu early in Saturday's contest, though. Florida raced out to a 8-0 lead inside the first two minutes, and the Wildcats didn't get on the scoreboard until more than three-and-a-half minutes into the game as the offense searched for a rhythm.

The UK Sports Network spotlighted the red-hot start for the visitors:

After a quick timeout, John Calipari's group managed to get the game back under control before it had the opportunity to get completely away from them.

The Wildcats managed to fight back in large part due to their massive rebounding advantage. They pulled down 30 boards in the first half compared to 17 for the Gators.

Fox's absence prevented them from taking full advantage of that edge, however, as Kentucky turned the ball over 12 times before the break. Florida gave it up just four times.

Add in poor shooting from both sides in the opening 20 minutes—each team shot below 30 percent—and a 28-28 deadlock was a fair representation of the first half.

Rick Bozich of WDRB Sports pointed out the Wildcats and Gators both squandered a chance to take a firm grasp on the game late in the half:

It persisted as a nip-and-tuck battle after the break.

Florida once again owned the early portion of the half. It built an eight-point lead after less than five minutes, but then Kentucky finally started to find its game offensively.

The Wildcats used a 9-0 run to get back on top midway through the second. More importantly, the ball movement and strong play down low they showed helped spark a much stronger finish at that end of the floor than they had shown over the first 30 minutes.

Slowly, but surely, Kentucky was able to wear down the Gators enough to pull away. The lead was 10 by the final media timeout and Florida couldn't get hot from long range to make one last charge.

ESPN Stats & Info provided more details about Monk's latest terrific performance:

Looking ahead, Kentucky is now in position to claim the top seed for the SEC Tournament. Victories over Vanderbilt at home on Tuesday and on the road against Texas A&M next Saturday—both mid-pack SEC opponents—would lock down the No. 1 spot.

The question is how high the Wildcats might be able to climb in the March Madness seed line if they are able to run the table from here to the SEC postseason title. That should be enough to at least get them a No. 2 seed, and potentially a No. 1 if they get help elsewhere around the nation.

Meanwhile, Saturday's loss may bring an end to Florida's hopes of chasing down a top seed for the Big Dance, but the Gators are still in good shape. Wins over Arkansas and Vanderbilt combined with a deep run in the SEC tourney should be enough for a three or four seed.

Postgame Reaction

Kernel Sports provided remarks from Calipari about the critical win in the SEC race:

The Wildcats coach specifically discussed Adebayo's improvement on the boards as a key, per Anthony Crawford of the Kentucky Kernel.

"I think he's getting in better shape and also has the mentality that he's just going to go after it," Calipari said.

On the flip side, Mark Story of the Lexington Herald-Leader relayed thoughts from White, who tipped his hat to Monk.

"He took the game over," the Florida coach said. "It was probably the best performance against us this year."
