Anthony Davis Sets NBA All-Star Game Record for Points
New Orleans Pelicans big man Anthony Davis finished Sunday night's NBA All-Star Game with a record for most points scored in the showcase's history, per NBA History on Twitter.
Davis totaled 52 points, shattering a 54-year-old record of 42 points posted by Wilt Chamberlain. The effort earned him All-Star MVP honors for the first time in his career. It also marked the first time a player from the home team took home the award since Kobe Bryant won it at the Staples Center in 2011, per NBA.com.
The Pelicans' power forward entered the weekend as the team's only representative on the Western Conference All-Star team, but, per ESPN.com, news dropped during the festivities that the Sacramento Kings dealt All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins along with Omri Casspi to New Orleans in exchange for Buddy Hield, Tyreke Evans, Langston Galloway and both a first and second-round pick in the 2017 NBA draft.
The duo represents arguably the best combo of big men in the league, combining to average more than 55 points, 22 rebounds and nearly four blocks per contest. The trade depleted some of the team's backcourt depth, leaving Jrue Holliday, Tim Frazier and E'Twaun Moore as the three healthy contributors.
Can the two stars co-exist? Both are used to being the primary option, but the move will likely result in Davis and Cousins sharing those duties. If the Pelicans can sign Cousins to a contract extension, they at least possess a pair of superstar forwards to lead the team into the future.
