Ashley Williams' late goal stunned Arsenal as they visited Everton in the Premier League, with the Merseyside club winning 2-1 after trailing on Tuesday.

Alexis Sanchez gave the Gunners a 20th-minute lead, but Seamus Coleman levelled the score on the stroke of half-time.

A close second-half battle was decided in the final minutes of the contest as Williams headed home, unopposed from a corner, to the frustration of the Arsenal bench.

Tuesday Recap

Arsenal suffered a dent to their title hopes at Goodison Park, falling to a late 2-1 defeat in a match they should have earned points from.

A muted atmosphere greeted the teams at kick-off, as Evertonians worried about the visit of the north London powerhouse.

Ross Barkley and Idrissa Gueye combined in the opening moments as the hosts pressed, but Everton struggled to test goalkeeper Petr Cech.

It was the Gunners who broke the deadlock after 20 minutes. Sanchez was once again Arsene Wenger's hero, and his deflected free-kick beat stopper Maarten Stekelenburg.

OptaJoe highlighted the Chilean superstar's amazing contribution:

However, the Toffees crowd woke up as their team hunted an equaliser, and their wishes were granted a minute before half-time.

Coleman met Leighton Baines' dangerous cross, and the Irishman headed home with the precision of a seasoned forward.

Wenger's team pushed forward once again in the second half, but Everton were more motivated after their late success in the first half.

The hosts' maverick approach allowed the Gunners space in behind, but football writer Tony Barrett was happy with how Everton were working—as the Gwladys Street Stand roared its approval:

The match was perfectly balanced as it entered the final 15 minutes, and it was the Toffees who made their pressure pay as Williams attacked a corner, and the defender converted from close range—sending Goodison Park into raptures.

Arsenal went for the jugular at the end of the game, but the timing of Williams' goal was crucial in the downfall of the north London club on the night.

Phil Jagielka collected a second yellow card in the final seconds of the match, but despite extreme pressure, Ronald Koeman's team held on for the win.

In Tuesday's other match, Bournemouth defeated Leicester at home, as the champions' bubble burst away from home.

Bournemouth took a deserved lead in the first half, with Marc Pugh reacting quickest to tuck away his strike after Ron-Robert Zieler initially saved Benik Afobe's shot.

The champions adopted a direct approach as they tried to break down the hosts, but the Cherries continued to have the better chances into the second half.

Riyad Mahrez remained a peripheral figure in the game as the visitors failed to hurt Bournemouth, and the Foxes sent on Ahmed Musa from the bench in an attempt to rescue points.

However, Leicester were second best on the night, and they are now involved in a relegation dogfight after last year's magnificent run to the title.

Arsenal's title credentials are to be questioned again after they were defeated in a game where they had control of the result.

Wenger's team did not react positively to Everton's fight and aggression, and they rolled over too easily at the end of a fascinating contest.
