Gianni VerschuerenDec 11, 2016

Premier League leaders Chelsea continued their fantastic run on Sunday, beating West Bromwich Albion 1-0 at Stamford Bridge to regain their spot at the top of the standings.

Diego Costa once again came to the rescue, scoring his 12th goal of the season to break the deadlock and hand his team a ninth consecutive league win.

Manchester United also grabbed a 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan finding the net, and Sofiane Boufal scored the only goal in Southampton's victory over Middlesbrough.

Recap

Chelsea were far from perfect against a feisty West Brom side on Sunday, but the visitors' resolve broke after 76 minutes, as Costa won the ball on the wing and fired a bullet strike into the top corner.

It was Costa's 12th goal of the season, pushing the Spain international to the top of the goalscoring chart ahead of Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez. The former Atletico Madrid has scored in all but one of his last six matches.

The Blues haven't lost in the league since September, when Arsenal beat them 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium—a result that directly led to the implementation of the 3-4-3 formation that has been so successful.

Bleacher Report UK couldn't help themselves:

Manager Antonio Conte had nothing but praise for his frontman, who has been simply phenomenal so far this season:

Further down the standings, United marginally closed the gap in the race for a top-four finish, beating Spurs 1-0 at Old Trafford to move six points behind Manchester City in fourth. Mkhitaryan continued his fine form with a goal after 29 minutes, becoming the first Armenian to score in the Premier League, per OptaJoe.

As shared by ESPN FC's Alex Shaw, the former Borussia Dortmund man has been in fine form since manager Jose Mourinho started making full use of him:

Neither side put together a convincing performance on Sunday, but the Red Devils were solid in midfield, doing a great job shielding their back line. In the past few weeks, holding on to a lead proved a major issue, so it's good to see the side record a clean sheet against a decent Spurs team.

Unfortunately, there was also some bad news, per United's official Twitter account:

On the south coast, Southampton grabbed a 1-0 win over Middlesbrough to move into 10th place, just seven points outside of a European spot.

Boufal took care of the scoring, and per Match of the Day, it was about time he got off the mark:

In Sunday's late match, West Ham battled to a 2-2 draw against Liverpool. Adam Lallana gave the Reds the lead after just five minutes, but Dimitri Payet and Michail Antonio turned things around for the Hammers before half-time.

After the break, Divock Origi pulled the Reds level, but manager Jurgen Klopp's troops couldn't find a winner.
