Flip 'Em Horns: Recruits Who Could Join Texas After Tom Herman's Arrival

Damon SaylesDec 13, 2016

It's been 17 days since Tom Herman was hired as the Texas Longhorns' head football coach. In that span, he's added one commit—junior college kicker Josh Rowland on Sunday—and has his sights set on a handful of 2017 targets, both committed and uncommitted.

There's a lot to be done for a class still without double-figure commitments, per Scout, but in the time between now and national signing day, look for Herman and the Longhorns staff to set recruiting to full throttle.

The good news for Texas: There's still a ton of uncommitted talent available. And there are a few committed targets who may be cajoled to call Austin, Texas, home by Feb. 1.

Here are 10 athletes to keep an eye on as Texas continues its hunt for elite talent.

4-Star RB Eno Benjamin

1 of 10

Hometown/school: Wylie, Texas/Wylie East HS

Size: 5'10", 203 lbs

Scout ranking: No. 106 overall (No. 10 RB)

Commitment status: Uncommitted

With the efforts of D'Onta Foreman, Texas showed what it can do with a dynamic running back. And while Eno Benjamin isn't the burly back that Foreman is, he is quicker and can be equally effective in next-level competition.

Benjamin, a onetime Iowa commit, finished a high school career that included more than 7,500 rushing yards and 106 touchdowns, including 2,604 yards and 32 touchdowns his senior year. He has a top six of Texas, Oklahoma State, Michigan, Utah, Arizona State and Missouri, but he has told multiple reporters that he would welcome a Texas offer. He finally got one last Thursday.

5-Star DT Marvin Wilson

2 of 10

Hometown/school: Bellaire, Texas/Episcopal HS

Size: 6'4", 329 lbs

Scout ranking: No. 11 overall (No. 1 DT)

Commitment status: Uncommitted

It seems like the longer the recruitment process goes, the lesser the chance of Texas landing the nation's top-ranked defensive tackle, Marvin Wilson. The self-proclaimed "Real Life Goon" has proven himself to be a force on the defensive line, and Texas has a competitive recruiting battle between now and national signing day.

LSU, Florida State and Ohio State are three schools believed to be major contenders for Wilson, but you can bet that the next few weeks will be huge for Herman and his staff—especially during the NCAA dead period. The Longhorns could use a 5-star defensive tackle to be the foundation of a recruiting class expected to grow immensely before February.

5-Star OT Walker Little

3 of 10

Hometown/school: Bellaire, Texas/Episcopal HS

Size: 6'8", 305 lbs

Scout ranking: No. 16 overall (No. 2 OT)

Commitment status: Uncommitted

Friday is the big day for Walker Little to announce his verbal commitment, and while Texas is considered a favorite, Stanford likes its chances to land the big offensive lineman as well. Ole Miss and Florida State also are in the running.

The winning school gets a long, powerful athlete who can play left or right tackle effectively at the next level. Little showed his worth with a dominant performance at The Opening, and he was a brick wall throughout his senior season. Little will enter college with the potential to immediately start.

4-Star DE K'Lavon Chaisson

4 of 10

Hometown/school: Galena Park, Texas/North Shore HS

Size: 6'4", 220 lbs

Scout ranking: No. 51 overall (No. 5 DE)

Commitment status: Uncommitted

Good luck reading K'Lavon Chaisson, an athlete who prefers showing his skills on the field instead of discussing his skills with the media. In recent conversations with Bleacher Report, Chaisson said he is almost ready to announce his verbal commitment.

Texas is hoping to land Chaisson, a rush end who is quick off the ball and athletic in passing situations. He's a player who makes everything appear natural on the field. The Longhorns feel they are in the driver's seat for him, but LSU, Houston, Florida State and Oklahoma are schools to keep an eye on.

3-Star OL Grant Polley

5 of 10

Hometown/school: Denton, Texas/Denton HS

Size: 6'4", 285 lbs

Scout ranking: No. 55 OG

Commitment status: Committed to Colorado

There's a lot to like about a lineman like Grant Polley. He's an athletic big man who is versatile enough to play both the tackle and guard positions at the next level. Polley committed to Colorado in July, but the Texas staff has made a push to try and keep him in the state.

Polley was offered shortly after Thanksgiving, and his presence would add depth to a lineman group that is becoming more of Texas' strongest asset. He has good feet and plays with solid pad level. More importantly, he's hungry to prove that he belongs in the conversation among the elite recruits.

4-Star CB Chevin Calloway

6 of 10

Hometown/school: Dallas/Bishop Dunne HS

Size: 5'10", 180 lbs

Scout ranking: No. 137 overall (No. 14 CB)

Commitment status: Uncommitted

What's better than a cornerback who can cover? A cornerback who can cover and likes to hit. That, in a nutshell, describes Chevin Calloway, an athlete who would be something of a steal for the Longhorns if they were able to land his commitment.

Calloway decommitted from Iowa in November to explore other options. While he has interest in Texas, Arkansas appears to be the school to beat. Ole Miss is also in the hunt. Texas can play the proximity card in this case, and additionally, there will be an opportunity for him to make waves as a freshman.

4-Star DE Ryan Johnson

7 of 10

Hometown/school: Mobile, Alabama/St. Paul's Episcopal School

Size: 6'4", 255 lbs

Scout ranking: No. 203 overall (No. 17 DE)

Commitment status: Uncommitted

Texas has two defensive ends committed in 4-stars Lagaryonn Carson and Taquon Graham, but an athlete with Ryan Johnson's talent would be hard to pass up. Johnson is a solid strong-side end who can be a game-changer for Herman's defense.

The toughest part in landing Johnson will be proximity. Alabama and Auburn are two schools that also are high on his list, and with him being an in-state kid, the chances of remaining in SEC country are high. Look for Herman and his staff to push for what would be a minor recruiting upset.

4-Star WR Omar Manning

8 of 10

Hometown/school: Lancaster, Texas/Lancaster HS

Size: 6'3", 203 lbs

Scout ranking: No. 76 overall (No. 10 WR)

Commitment status: Committed to TCU

Texas felt like it made a huge impression over the weekend when Omar Manning took an official visit. Committed to TCU since Oct. 21, Manning had positive things to say about the Longhorns and told EJ Holland of 247Sports that his family liked Herman and his staff.

TCU is still considered a heavy favorite to earn his signature on a letter of intent during national signing day, but if there's any school that can earn the flip, it's Texas. You can bet the Longhorns will continue working on Manning, who had 45 catches for 742 yards and eight touchdowns as a senior.

3-Star TE Cade Brewer

9 of 10

Hometown/school: Austin, Texas/Lake Travis HS

Size: 6'3", 215 lbs

Scout ranking: No. 73 TE

Commitment status: Committed to SMU

The tight end position is an important piece of the puzzle in Texas' 2017 class, and Cade Brewer is among the high targets for Herman and the Longhorns. He's a local athlete who can be a flex end and a reliable receiver in Herman's offense.

Texas has a few tight ends on its list, including junior college 4-star Sal Cannella and 3-star Reese Leitao. Landing Brewer, an SMU commit since April, would be a solid get for the Longhorns. Look for Brewer to be a possession receiver who can also spread the field.

4-Star WR CeeDee Lamb

10 of 10

Hometown/school: Richmond, Texas/Foster HS

Size: 6'2", 172 lbs

Scout ranking: No. 223 overall (No. 31 WR)

Commitment status: Committed to Oklahoma

Few high school wide receivers can say they flirted with 100 receptions and accounted for more than 2,000 yards in a season. CeeDee Lamb had one of those careers that made college scouts shake their heads—and also made Oklahoma recruiters further value his verbal commitment back in July.

The hardest part for Oklahoma now is keeping Lamb committed, and Texas is doing all it can to flip the stud receiver. The Longhorns offered him last Thursday, and while it will be tough to gain his commitment, Lamb would be an excellent complement to 4-star receiver commit Damion Miller.
