Jay Norvell to Nevada: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction
The Nevada Wolf Pack agreed to hire Arizona State Sun Devils wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator Jay Norvell as their new head football coach, FootballScoop's Zach Barnett reported Wednesday.
Nevada officially announced the news on Friday.
The 53-year-old has an expansive resume that includes stops in college and the pros, so he figures to be a welcome addition for a Nevada team that is looking to return to the bowl circuit following a 5-7 season in 2016.
| 2010 | 13-1 | Won Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl |
| 2011 | 7-6 | Lost Hawaii Bowl |
| 2012 | 7-6 | Lost New Mexico Bowl |
| 2013 | 4-8 | — |
| 2014 | 7-6 | Lost New Orleans Bowl |
| 2015 | 7-6 | Won Arizona Bowl |
| 2016 | 5-7 | — |
While he most recently coached a Sun Devils passing attack that averaged 259.3 yards per game through the air, Norvell previously served as a wide receivers coach with the Indianapolis Colts and tight ends coach with the Oakland Raiders.
Following a stretch in the NFL, Norvell arrived at Nebraska in 2004 and spent three seasons as the Cornhuskers' quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator. Norvell then proceeded to spend time with the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners before landing with the Sun Devils.
Nevada will represent Norvell's first head coaching gig, and the Wolf Pack will hope that he can turn the team's offense around following a disappointing season under Brian Polian.
During their five-win campaign, the Wolf Pack mustered 208.2 passing yards per game and relied heavily on the run to bulldoze opponents.
But now that Norvell is in the fold with loads of experience at some of the nation's premier Power Five conference programs, the Wolf Pack should feel good about making noise in the Mountain West as they seek a return to prominence.
