Jose Mourinho Says He Has 'Nothing to Hide' over Reported Tax Evasion

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho said he has "nothing to hide" over reported tax-avoidance allegations.

The Portuguese was named among a number of individuals within professional football who have allegedly been involved in tax-avoidance schemes, with leaked documents suggesting millions of pounds in tax has been unpaid after money was moved to the British Virgin Islands, the BBC reported.

And according to the latest allegations by Spanish newspaper El Mundo (h/t Dominic King of the Daily Mail), Mourinho reduced his tax bill by filing "fictitious" company expenses.

Mourinho defended himself after his side's draw with Everton, per King: "I have lodged the documents in Italy, Spain and England. I have nothing to hide. They prove that I have done nothing wrong."

Mourinho was listed in the documents, as well as Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo and Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil, according to King.

They were uncovered by the European Investigations Collaborative (EIC), a group of 12 European newspapers, including El Mundo, Germany's Der Spiegel and the Sunday Times, who are publishing findings under the banner "Football Leaks."

Per the BBC report, Mourinho is alleged to have moved €12 million (£10 million) offshore to the British Virgin Islands.

The Sunday Times reported further that Mourinho's advisers "fabricated more than £1 million in costs run up by a British Virgin Islands shell company with no employees."

Mourinho's agent Jorge Mendes and his company Gestifute were also implicated in the allegations and have denied any wrongdoing.

The allegations against Mourinho relate to his period spent as manager of Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, according to El Mundo (h/t BBC).

Per the BBC, a statement by football agency Gestifute, who also represent Ronaldo, read:

Both Cristiano Ronaldo and Jose Mourinho are fully compliant with their tax obligations with the Spanish and British tax authorities.

Any insinuation or accusation made to Cristiano Ronaldo or Jose Mourinho over the commission of a tax offence will be reported to the legal authorities and prosecuted.

"

In response, Gestifute also posted a tax declaration issued by the Spanish Tax Agency.

Mourinho, who has denied the allegations, will be hoping to shift the focus back to matters on the field with his Manchester United side still struggling to keep pace with the Premier League front-runners.
