Conor McGregor Issued Boxing License in State of California
For those who are waiting on a Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. superfight, it looks as though things might have been set in motion.
McGregor's agent, Audie Attar, told MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani on Wednesday that California granted his client a boxing license.
John Kavanagh, McGregor's coach, confirmed to James Orr of the Sun the Irishman and Mayweather "are in talks for the potential boxing fight, and 2017 could be the year we see the two clash."
According to Jeremy Botter of FloSports, talks between McGregor and Mayweather have been going on for almost a year, and the state of the discussions is "optimistic."
The news got Sean Sheehan of Sherdog amped:
The UFC recently stripped McGregor of his featherweight belt because he has yet to defend the 145-pound title after winning at UFC 194 in December 2015, according to MMA Fighting's Guilherme Cruz. However, he still owns the lightweight title he won over Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 on Nov. 12.
Mayweather hasn't stepped into a boxing ring since September 2015, when he defeated Andre Berto to improve his career record to 49-0-0 and retired shortly after.
However, both fighters have been teasing a bout throughout 2016 and have feuded through the media in the process. With McGregor getting his boxing license, the UFC star is basically telling Mayweather the ball is in his court.
While there will be plenty of details to hammer out in order to make this dream fight a reality, it's safe to assume that if it does happen, it will be one of the most anticipated sporting events in recent memory.
