Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley Discuss Donald Trump's Win over Hillary Clinton
Figures from across the sports world have chimed in regarding Donald Trump's victory over Hillary Clinton in Tuesday's general election, and Inside the NBA host Ernie Johnson offered a hopeful sentiment before Thursday's game between the Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat.
Speaking alongside Kenny Smith, Shaquille O'Neal and Charles Barkley, Johnson disclosed he did not vote for President-elect Trump or Clinton. Instead, he wrote in Ohio Gov. John Kasich—who ran against Trump and a field of others in the Republican primary.
And while Johnson admitted he was discouraged by the negative tone that enveloped much of the 2016 campaign cycle, he looked to Thursday's meeting between President Barack Obama and Trump at the White House as a source of optimism.
The NBA on TNT's official Twitter account offered a complete overview of Johnson's remarks:
On Sunday, Johnson discussed why he decided to comment on the election, per Richard Deitsch of Sports Illustrated:
"I didn’t do this with the intention of getting response on social media. All we were doing was what everyone in this country was doing, processing this election. And the way I processed this election, because it is who I am, I had to include my spiritual take on this. That’s what’s given me perspective on this. I believe whoever is in the White House, God is in charge. That’s me. And I voiced that on TV.
"
Barkley also discussed the results and admitted he "was in shock" and "totally surprised" by the results.
But like Johnson, Barkley took a more positive approach looking forward when he noted the nation needs to "move on" and give Trump a chance, as the NBA on TNT documented:
After divisive discourse dominated the news cycle, Johnson and Barkley's determination to take a more positive view represents a refreshing shift.
