AP College Football Poll 2016: Complete Week 7 Rankings Revealed

Tyler ConwayOct 10, 2016

If you simply look at the Top Five, it would look like we had an uneventful weekend of college football. The latest Associated Press poll tells a story of stasis, with Alabama and Ohio State remaining the class of the nation while Clemson, Michigan and Washington turned in dominant performances.

Immediately after the Top Five, though, things went crazy fast.

Houston's hopes of spoiling the College Football Playoff were dashed with one military strike after the other, as Navy earned a 46-40 upset of the sixth-ranked Cougars. With Texas A&M finally taking down Tennessee and Florida State upending Miami, the remainder of the Top 25 looks far different from its predecessor:

Navy's home triumph created by far the biggest ripple effect, as Houston had seemed preordained to head into its Nov. 17 matchup with Louisville undefeated. The Midshipmen rushed for 306 yards and two touchdowns, holding possession for more than 34 minutes. Houston outgained Navy by 102 total yards but committed three turnovers, all by standout quarterback Greg Ward Jr.

"This one hurts," coach Tom Herman said, per Joseph Duarte of the Houston Chronicle. "But we still have everything in front of us. Our goal, as it is each and every year, is to win our conference championship and go to a New Year's Six bowl game. We've got an opportunity to go continue that journey."

Houston has almost no chance of pushing itself back into the title picture after plunging all the way to No. 13.

Moving in the opposite direction is Texas A&M, as the Aggies sit at No. 6 after a double-overtime win over Tennessee. Much like every other Tennessee opponent, Kevin Sumlin's team nearly blew its shot. A missed game-winning field goal at the end of regulation sent the game to overtime—despite the Vols' six turnovers in regulation.

It took a seventh to finally seal the deal. Josh Dobbs threw his second pick of the game in double overtime after an Aggies score, finishing a strange game that nonetheless has A&M at 6-0.

"The big takeaway from this was we were able to withstand some things, not play great but make enough plays to win the game without some of our better players being 100 percent," Sumlin said, per Kristie Rieken of the Associated Press (h/t Dyersburg State Gazette).

Tennessee had won four of its first five games by 10 or fewer points, including taking down Georgia with a last-second Hail Mary. The loss to A&M takes some of the air out of top-ranked Alabama's visit to Knoxville on Saturday.

The ACC now looks borderline doomed to miss the playoffs after Miami's undefeated run ended in a one-point loss to Florida State (20-19). The Hurricanes set themselves up to tie the game with 1:38 remaining, but DeMarcus Walker blocked Michael Badgley's point-after attempt. It was the latest in a series of matchups between these two rivals decided by mistakes in the kicking game.

"Not being able to protect well enough to kick an extra point is tough," Miami coach Mark Richt told reporters. "Tough for everybody. But, to their credit, somebody cared enough to blast through and get it. It was a great effort on their part."

The win prevented Florida State from dropping to 3-3 on the season, which would have ended all hopes of a conference championship. The Seminoles aren't making the playoffs, but they can still sneak into a New Year's Six bowl if they win out.

North Carolina was unable to parlay its win over Florida State into further success, taking an embarrassing 34-3 loss to Virginia Tech. The Hokies held UNC to 131 yards of total offense.

That is only somewhat better than Stanford, which saw its offense once again stall in a 42-16 loss to Washington State. The Cardinal did not score an offensive touchdown until the final play of regulation, which featured garbage-time starters. Running back Christian McCaffrey has just 84 total rushing yards in Stanford's last two games.

Bleacher Report's Adam Kramer put things in perspective:

The Pac-12 also saw Colorado bow out of the rankings after a 21-17 loss to USC.

Auburn, Western Michigan and Navy entered the Top 25 after being absent last week.
