NCAA Football Rankings 2016: Week 6 Polls, Top 25 Standings and Analysis

Tyler ConwayOct 3, 2016

The college football calendar was jam-packed with a historic number of Top 10 matchups over the weekend, which has led to a major reshuffling atop the latest polls.

Alabama and Ohio State held steady as the nation's top two teams after wins against unranked opponents, but the landscape shifted underneath them. Clemson moved to the third spot after defeating Louisville in a thriller, while Michigan sits in the fourth spot after taking down Wisconsin.

The fifth spot created a difference of opinion between the coaches and media. For the Associated Press, Washington's blowout win over Stanford was enough to put the Huskies in fifth. For the coaches, Houston's continued success allowed the Cougars to move up a pair of spots.

Ranked second in the preseason, Clemson made a statement Saturday night after a shaky first month. Deshaun Watson threw five touchdown passes to atone for three interceptions, compiling 397 total yards in the process. Lamar Jackson, the Heisman front-runner coming into this week, did everything in his power to keep the Cardinals undefeated. He had 457 yards of total offense and threw or ran the ball a whopping 75 times.

It was every bit of the clash of the titans it was billed.

"We both played good for our teams, and [the Heisman] is out of my control," Watson said, per David M. Hale of ESPN.com. "My mind is on a national championship. It's not on the Heisman."

Michigan's spectacular individual performance in its 14-7 win over Wisconsin came on the defensive side. Not only did the Wolverines hold the Badgers to 159 total yards, but they also forced three turnovers—none being more spectacular than the last. With Wisconsin trying to drive the length of the field for a game-tying score, Michigan corner Jourdan Lewis leapt up with one arm outstretched and hauled in an underthrown ball for an interception.

"We see him make a lot of plays, but that was on another level," quarterback Wilton Speight said, per Mark Snyder of the Detroit Free Press. "I think he jumped and floated for five yards and somehow caught it with one hand. That's a guy that's going to be playing on Sunday for a long time. I'm glad he's on our team."

The Wolverines left multiple scoring opportunities on the field, missing three field goals.

"If you want to be a great team, you’ve got to learn from mistakes," Speight said, per George Schroeder of USA Today. "We do that. To have so many of them, it’s a lot to learn and a lot to build on. ... It’s a good feeling to have that type of game and walk away victorious."

Washington's 44-6 win over Stanford was perhaps the biggest noise made by a Top 10 team this week. The Huskies nearly doubled Stanford's total yards, forced a pair of turnovers and converted on nine of 12 third-down chances. They scored the first 30 points of the game and held Christian McCaffrey to 49 rushing yards.

"We're not there," coach Chris Petersen said, per Ivan Maisel of ESPN.com. "I'm not saying we're there. I know how this thing goes. You sleep on anybody, feeling like we got it, we got it figured out. I know what comes next."

Washington heads to Oregon next week, facing a Ducks team that's lost three straight.

Tennessee kept its playoff hopes alive in perhaps the most surprising fashion of all: a last-second Hail Mary. Seemingly headed for a loss to Georgia, Joshua Dobbs sent a 43-yard heave into the arms of Jauan Jennings as time expired for the win.

"There’s something about this team," coach Butch Jones said, per Mike Griffith of SEC Country. "They’re resilient. They understand. You don’t win a game like that unless you have character, and I continue to say that."

Overall, there were nine games featuring Top 25 teams that were decided by one score. It created the most exciting week of the 2016 college football season so far and sets the bar high for the remaining Saturdays on the calendar.

Given all the excitement and shuffling we've already seen, though, don't be surprised if Week 6 winds up providing some decent competition.
