College Football Scores 2016: Top 25 Teams' Week 3 Results, Key Stats and Stars

Steve SilvermanSep 17, 2016

The second-ranked Florida State Seminoles knew they would have a tough battle on their hands when they went to Louisville to play the 10th-ranked Cardinals.

But instead of a taut battle that was decided late in the fourth quarter, it was a complete runaway. The Cardinals drubbed their more esteemed visitors by a 63-20 score.

It was not a surprise to see the Louisville offense find its high gear against the Seminoles, but it's quite another to shut down running back Dalvin Cook and quarterback Deondre Francois. Cook was held to 54 yards on the ground and he didn't have a run longer than 14 yards. Francois had a difficult time finding open receivers, and when he did, he was not accurate.

On the other hand, the Cardinals found huge creases in the Florida State defense, scoring 35 points in the first half and removing all doubt from this game.

Quarterback Lamar Jackson had a huge day for Louisville, throwing one TD pass and running for four more.

If the Cardinals wanted to make a statement early in the football season, they certainly accomplished their goal. They outplayed Florida State in all phases of the game, and head coach Bobby Petrino had it all over Jimbo Fisher.

Louisville should be able to make a huge jump in the polls this week.

Stars of the Week

QB Lamar Jackson, Louisville

Louisville dominated Florida State from start to finish Saturday, and Petrino had a slew of heroes on his team.

However, it's hard to find someone who played any better than Jackson. The quarterback was sharp in his passing as he completed 13-of-20 passes for 216 yards with a touchdown. He was even better on the ground as he carried 17 times for 146 yards and crossed the goal line four times.

In addition to his fine statistics, Jackson showed his leadership and maturity. While Florida State was making mistakes, Jackson stayed calm and took advantage of every opportunity.

While the Cardinals are only three games into the season, Jackson has already made a bold statement and has the look of a Heisman Trophy contender.

QB Brad Kaaya, Miami (Fla.)

Are the 25th-ranked Miami Hurricanes back to their once-lofty status?

There is still a long way to go for this team, but they accomplished quite a bit in their 45-10 triumph over Appalachian State.

While the Mountaineers are not a big-time opponent, the Hurricanes moved the ball with ease and followed the lead of Kaaya, who had a sensational day. Kaaya completed a razor-sharp 21-of-27 passes for 368 yards and three touchdowns.

Miami head coach Mark Richt said Kaaya is the kind of quarterback who can carry a team when it is under pressure. "There is a lot of weight on his shoulders, but he handles it well,"  Richt said after the game (h/t ESPN.com).

The 21-year-old quarterback may take time to relax since Miami is entering its bye week.

Kaaya threw two of his TD passes to Stacy Coley and the other went to David Njoku. Kaaya stood in the pocket, took some shots but delivered accurate pass after accurate pass.

Kaaya has thrown for 300 yards or more eight times in his career, according to Susan Miller Degnan of the Miami Herald.

He has a chance to be one of the top quarterbacks drafted in 2017 if he can continue to perform at this level.

North Dakota State Defense

The North Dakota State Bison were not the least bit intimidated by its trip to Iowa City to play the 13th-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes.

The Bison had won their first two games of the season, and head coach Chris Klieman brought a powerful and sharp defense with him.

North Dakota State simply dominated on that side of the ball, holding Iowa to 34 yards on the ground despite 25 rushing attempts. That allowed North Dakota State to win the time of possession battle 36:40-23:20.

The Bison came away with a 23-21 victory right in the heart of Big Ten country. Cam Pederson connected on a 37-yard field goal as time expired. That kick came after North Dakota State had tried to take the lead earlier on a two-point conversion late in the fourth quarter, but Iowa turned that away.

Klieman explained his logic at going for two with 3:41 left in the game and his team trailing 21-20. "If we didn't make it I thought we could stop them," Klieman said. "I thought our offense was kind of wearing them down."

The defense once again got the ball back, and the FCS Bison showed they could compete with an undefeated Big Ten team on the road and come away with the win.
