MAC, Big 12 Suspend Officiating, Replay Crews from CMU vs. Oklahoma State Game
One of the most incredible college football plays you will ever see should not have happened, and the officials are paying the price.
Central Michigan upset Oklahoma State on Saturday on the hands of a Hail Mary coming on an untimed down. The play came after an offensive penalty, which should have instead ended the game. According to Ralph D. Russo of the Associated Press, the MAC has suspended the officials for two games.
Jake Trotter of ESPN provided the official statement from the conference:
The MAC explained the issue in a statement immediately after the game, per Bryan Fischer of College Football Talk.
Oklahoma State ran a fourth-down play with four seconds remaining on the clock, but quarterback Mason Rudolph was called for an intentional grounding after he threw the ball away. The official ruling is that since the penalty results in a loss of downs, the game should end immediately.
Instead, the game officials awarded Central Michigan an untimed down from its own 41-yard line, giving the team one chance to win the game down three points.
What resulted was an incredible play that will be tough to replicate:
Andrew Siciliano of NFL Network summed up what many fans were thinking at the time:
Despite the incorrect ruling, the game result will stand, with Oklahoma State suffering its first loss of the season. Central Michigan moves to 2-0 and remains one of the top threats in the MAC.
Meanwhile, the fans were treated to a play they won't forget anytime soon.
