Arkansas vs. TCU: Score and Twitter Reaction

Alec NathanSep 10, 2016

The Arkansas Razorbacks allowed 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, falling eight points behind the TCU Horned Frogs with just over two minutes remaining in regulation, but a stunning series of events allowed the Razorbacks to come back and stun the nation's 15th-ranked team with a 41-38 double-overtime win at Amon G. Carter Stadium on Saturday night.

After the Razorbacks (2-0) marched 58 yards in 1:02 to pull to within two points, they deployed a double-reverse pass that found quarterback Austin Allen in the end zone to tie things at 28-28.

TCU (1-1) bolted into enemy territory as time ticked down in the fourth quarter, but Arkansas came up with a blocked field goal on the Horned Frogs' 28-yard game-winning attempt to send the game to overtime.

Both sides traded touchdowns in the opening frame of the extra session, and Arkansas emerged victorious when Allen bullied his way into the end zone on a quarterback keeper after TCU was forced to settle for a field goal.

According to ESPN Stats & Info, Arkansas tied Tennessee for the most overtime wins (12) among SEC schools Saturday evening. It was also Arkansas' third straight road win against an opponent ranked in the Associated Press Top 20, per Saturday Down South

The loss snapped TCU's 14-game home winning streak, but the Horned Frogs had a slew of positives to take away from the loss.

Quarterback Kenny Hill started in shaky fashion, but he rebounded late, finishing 36-of-56 passing for 377 yards, one touchdown and an interception to go with 15 carries for 93 yards and two touchdowns.

Similarly, wide receiver KaVontae Turpin was electric all night long, finishing with seven catches for 126 yards as well as four kick returns for 136 yards—including a long of 64.

TCU rushed for 195 yards at a clip of 6.1 yards per carry. Kyle Hicks toted the rock 11 times for 49 yards and two touchdowns, while Derrick Green notched five carries for 31 yards.

Arkansas, meanwhile, was buoyed by Allen and running back Rawleigh Williams III.

Allen's raw numbers were nothing special, as he completed 17 of 29 passes for 223 yards and three touchdowns, but as Bleacher Report's Matt Hayes noted, the junior made sharp reads throughout the contest:

Williams rushed 28 times for 137 yards, and he operated as the fulcrum of head coach Bret Bielema's offense during a prosperous start.

While the first half was an uneventful affair, the Razorbacks asserted themselves as the more consistent and efficient team thanks to a strong rushing attack anchored by Williams.

The sophomore running back ran with determination, allowing Arkansas to control the tempo and impose its will on a TCU defense that wasn't strong up front early.

On the flip side, Hill was out of sorts throughout the first two quarters—especially when he tried to find receivers over the middle, as the Star-Telegram's Carlos A. Mendez observed:

That much was clear in the second quarter, when Hill lofted a pass that linebacker Brooks Ellis intercepted and returned 47 yards for a touchdown, which helped the Razorbacks increase their lead to 13-0:

According to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette's Thomas Murphy, Ellis' pick-six was Arkansas' first since Rohan Gaines returned an interception 100 yards for a touchdown against Ole Miss in November 2014.

Arkansas entered halftime up 13-0, and according to Mendez, it marked the first time the Horned Frogs were shut out in the first half of a regular-season game since they faced Oklahoma State in October 2013.

However, TCU didn't remain scoreless for long.

Head coach Gary Patterson's squad came out of halftime and stitched together a nine-play, 84-yard touchdown drive that took 3:02.

But Arkansas struck right back with a six-play, 63-yard drive that was capped off by a 13-yard touchdown pass to Drew Morgan. TCU then capitalized on a missed 22-yard field-goal attempt with a one-yard touchdown run by Hill to punctuate a rapid-fire drive that spanned 80 yards in just under two minutes.

SEC Country's Jason Kersey noted how costly the Razorbacks' missed chip shot was:

Down just six at that point, TCU was feeling it.

Turpin sparked the Horned Frogs on special teams and in the passing game, and his blinding speed on back-to-back plays thrust the Horned Frogs deep into Arkansas territory before Kyle Hicks walked in for his second touchdown of the game to help TCU secure a one-point lead.

Hill's second scoring scamper propelled TCU to an eight-point lead with 2:05 remaining, but Arkansas wasn't fazed and struck back in a matter of seconds thanks to Austin's composure.

Bielema's call for a double-reverse pass to Allen for the game-tying two-point conversion call was a thing of beauty, and it gave the Razorbacks the confidence boost they needed to stem the tide.

Now 2-0, Arkansas will look to keep up its winning ways next Saturday against Texas State before SEC play begins on the road one week later versus Texas A&M.

TCU, on the other hand, will have a golden opportunity to rebound at home when it hosts Iowa State before hitting the road for an intrastate showdown against SMU on Sept. 23.

Postgame Reaction

"I think we're a good football team," Bielema said, according to SEC Country's Trent Shadid." Maybe now people will take notice."

"We want to keep you in your seat for four quarters and then some," he added of the team's thrilling victory, per ESPN.com's Edward Aschoff

As for the Horned Frogs, Patterson pointed to Hill's 15-yard taunting penalty after his team went up eight as a turning point that helped Arkansas come back and tie things up.

"We made too many little mistakes," he said, according to Mendez. "Like the celebration at the end of the touchdown."

Patterson also told reporters that he regretted not trying to make it a two-score game after taking the lead late in the fourth quarter.

"I should have went for two," he said, per Mendez. "I got talked out of it. It is what it is."
