B/R Recruiting Notebook: B1G Visit for 4-Star; Upset-Win Reactions from Recruits

Damon SaylesSep 5, 2016

Arguably the greatest opening weekend in college football history lived up to its expectations. From Friday through Sunday, entering into today's clash pitting Ole Miss and Florida State, college football fans were well entertained, and social media was buzzing at a high level.

In fact, Sunday's Notre Dame-Texas battle, which the Longhorns won in double-overtime, upset fashion, scored very high ratings on ABC.

Recruiting also had its moments throughout the weekend, as athletes made their first official visits to various locations, getting the all-access experiences that will help them make well-informed decisions when it's time for a verbal commitment.

Here are a few recruiting updates from athletes around the nation:

Nebraska official visit on deck for 4-star Potts

R.J. Potts

Fishers, Indiana, 4-star safety R.J. Potts has offers from Notre Dame, Nebraska and Missouri, among others. He also has an offer from in-state Indiana.

Can the Hoosiers keep him close to home? Some are making that prediction, but Nebraska is doing its part to get Potts in its shade of red. The Cornhuskers are Potts' latest offer, and he confirmed to Bleacher Report that Nebraska will be his first official visit. A date is still to be determined, but he is looking at the weekend of Sept. 17, when the Cornhuskers host Oregon.

"I really didn't know much about [Nebraska] until after I got the offer and did some research," Potts said. "They have a strong tradition and program. They have great coaches and have been doing well in the last few years."

Wherever Potts ends up, he'll be a versatile option for either side of the ball. Projected as a next-level safety, Potts can play safety, cornerback, nickelback and linebacker on defense and wide receiver on offense.

Potts said schools like Michigan and Tennessee could be potential official visit destinations in the near future. Indiana also is in the running for a visit. Potts is ranked the No. 3 player out of the state of Indiana and a top-25 safety nationally.

Upsets garner Twitter reaction from recruits

Wisconsin over LSU. Houston over Oklahoma. Texas over Notre Dame. Texas A&M over UCLA.

Even South Alabama over Mississippi State. Wait, what?

Upset victories were among the multiple storylines of college football over the weekend, and several recruits were paying attention.

2018 wide receiver Brennan Eagles posted this picture after Texas' win. The 4-star receiver was with 2017 5-star defensive tackle Marvin Wilson and 2018 4-star Alabama tight end pledge Malcolm Epps.

2018 quarterback Cade Fortin ended his recruiting process early by committing to Texas A&M last month. He took in College Station on Saturday as a part of the 100,000-plus crowd that saw the Aggies hold off UCLA.

Wisconsin Badgers 3-star offensive tackle commit Tyler Beach hails from Port Washington, Wisconsin, and made the drive to Lambeau Field for the Badgers' win against LSU. The home of the Green Bay Packers was a sea of cardinal and white.

And who would have predicted South Alabama to get its biggest win in program history on the road against Mississippi State? Ryan Johnson, a 4-star defensive end from Mobile, Alabama, was at Auburn over the weekend but took time to praise the school in his hometown on a monumental victory.

Perhaps there will be additional comments on social media from recruits and targets after Monday night if Ole Miss can score an upset win against Florida State.

Nothing to see here: Mond still solid with A&M

Kellen Mond

IMG Academy 4-star quarterback Kellen Mond made an unintentional buzz on social media Sunday evening as the Texas Longhorns scored their upset win against Notre Dame. During the game, Mond, originally from San Antonio, tweeted a supportive message to the Longhorns

One problem with this: Mond is committed to Texas A&M—Texas' biggest rival.

Mond ultimately deleted the tweet to kill any rumors and to avoid any misconception. He is not wavering on his commitment; he just wants to see all of the teams from his home state be successful.

Mond committed to Texas A&M on June 27, choosing the Aggies over Auburn, Ohio State and a host of other programs. He was a one-time Baylor commit but parted ways with the Bears on June 1.

On Saturday, Mond showed in dramatic fashion why Texas A&M is so high on him. He rallied IMG in an epic, 50-49 win against Centennial High School out of Corona, California.

Mond threw for more than 400 yards and four touchdowns, including his last to 2018 wide receiver Brian Hightower with 12 seconds left, and the ensuing, go-ahead, two-point conversion to 2018 running back Asa Martin.

4 to keep an eye on for 3-star WR Calvin

Jamire Calvin

The recruiting process has had its ups and downs for Los Angeles 3-star wide receiver Jamire Calvin. With 26 reported offers, the speedy athlete said he's had his fun days and his stressful days with everything recruiting has to offer.

Calvin announced his top eight schools of Alabama, Arizona State, Cal, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Oregon State, UCLA and Washington State on June 27. Of the eight schools, Calvin said he hears from four regularly—Oregon State, Cal, Nebraska and Notre Dame.

"Right now, I'm just evaluating schools, getting ready to take my officials and finding the best fit for me," Calvin said. "I'm looking for a second home and a place where I can feel comfortable. I want to be developed by the best and be prepared for life after college."

Nebraska and Notre Dame are two schools trending for Calvin, who is expected to make a final decision in January. He's a receiver who can play either as an outside threat or in the slot.
