College Football Recruits Who Dominated Stat Sheet in Week 1

Tyler DonohueSep 4, 2016

The 2016 college football season commenced across America this weekend, providing a new spotlight for several young athletes. Many of these new collegiate standouts are just a year or two removed from high school action, which is where we shift the focus each Sunday throughout the fall for a look at prospects who punished opponents.

Our weekly rundown creates a glimpse of what makes these teenage talents so coveted by coaching staffs, as they validate scholarship offers by filling the stat sheet and carrying their squads. Here's a look at a collection of recruits who opened September in emphatic fashion.

4-Star QB Tate Martell

1 of 8

Class: 2017

High School: Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas)

Size: 5'10 ½", 203 lbs

Composite Ranking: No. 2 dual-threat quarterback; No. 57 overall

Recruitment Status: Committed to Ohio State

Tate Martell and Bishop Gorman continue to cruise against competition from across the country, decimating Cocoa High School (Florida) in Friday's home opener. He tossed four touchdowns and added another score on the ground, per MaxPreps, spurring the Gaels to a 46-10 victory.

The Buckeyes pledge, who spent his junior season committed to Texas A&M, accumulated 365 total yards and still hasn't suffered a loss since taking over as Bishop Gorman's starter as a sophomore. This dominant multiyear stretch for Martell features 5,553 passing yards, 1,280 rushing yards and 94 touchdowns.

4-Star RB D'Andre Swift

2 of 8

Class: 2017

High School: St. Joseph's (Philadelphia)

Size: 5'9 ½", 214 lbs

Composite Ranking: No. 4 running back; No. 37 overall

Recruitment Status: Committed to Georgia

It was a huge week for Philly standout D'Andre Swift, who announced his commitment to Georgia on Thursday via a Bleacher Report video. He followed the highly anticipated announcement with more fireworks Friday night, finding the end zone four times against Oaks Christian High School (California).

Swift provided further evidence of a dynamic skill set by doing damage as rusher and receiver, racking up 296 total offensive yards in a 49-17 win, according to Jeff Sentell of DawgNation. He recorded long-distance touchdown receptions of 79 and 89 yards, and again showed big play ability by taking a carry 62 yards for a score.

4-Star QB Jalen Mayden

3 of 8

Class: 2018

High School: Sachse (Texas)

Size: 6'2", 208 lbs

Composite Ranking: No. 6 dual-threat quarterback; No. 179 overall

Recruitment Status: Uncommitted; offers include Houston, Illinois, Louisville and Mississippi State

The younger brother of 2016 Alabama signee Jared Mayden continues to make a name for himself on the fields of Texas. His latest effort featured four touchdown passes in a 33-19 victory over Plano West High School, according to Brian Perroni of 247Sports.

Jalen Mayden completed 17 throws for 308 yards during the victory, and has now recorded eight total touchdowns without an interception through two contests this season, per MaxPreps. Dating back to his sophomore campaign, Mayden has a 67 percent completion rating with 36 touchdown tosses and just six interceptions.

3-Star WR Jamire Calvin

4 of 8

Class: 2017

High School: Cathedral (Los Angeles, California)

Size: 5'9", 175 lbs

Composite Ranking: No. 65 receiver; No. 429 overall

Recruitment Status: Uncommitted; offers include Cal, Nebraska, Notre Dame and Ole Miss

Few prospects at any position have entered the 2016 season with such ferocity as Los Angeles receiver Jamire Calvin, who carried Cathedral to a 51-7 dismantling of Burroughs High School on Friday. He turned eight catches into 181 yards and four scores, according to Tom Loy of 247Sports.

Calvin also contributed mightily on special teams, tacking on a fifth touchdown with a 74-yard punt return. He's tallied 16 receptions for 412 yards and six scores through two games as a senior. Calvin also spent this weekend on an official visit at Nebraska.

4-Star QB Kellen Mond

5 of 8

Class: 2017

High School: IMG Academy (Bradenton, Florida)

Size: 6'2 ½", 201 lbs

Composite Ranking: No. 3 dual-threat quarterback; No. 84 overall

Recruitment Status: Committed to Texas A&M

Kellen Mond looks quite comfortable in his new role as offensive leader for a star-studded IMG Academy attack. Mond, an Elite 11 finalist who transferred to Florida from Texas for his senior year, came up clutch in a cross-country battle Saturday night against Southern California powerhouse Centennial High School.

His performance featured 411 passing yards and four touchdown tosses, according to Eric Sondheimer of the Los Angeles Times, while Mond also shredded the defense for 101 rushing yards. His most monumental contribution occurred with 12 seconds remaining in the matchup, as Mond completed a 38-yard touchdown throw and followed it with a game-winning shovel pass on the two-point conversion, providing IMG Academy with a 50-49 win.

4-Star WR Jalen Reagor

6 of 8

Class: 2017

High School: Waxahachie (Waxahachie, Texas)

Size: 5'11", 182 lbs

Composite Ranking: No. 15 receiver; No. 127 overall

Recruitment Status: Committed to Oklahoma

Jalen Reagor, the son of former All-American Texas Tech defensive lineman Montae Reagor, made a strong case for consideration as the Lone Star State's premier pass-catcher Friday night against Highland Park. He starred in a high-scoring affair, snagging three scores in a 40-37 victory, according to Brian Perroni of 247Sports.

It was monster performance for Reagor, who recorded eight total receptions for 205 yards. A strong offseason of camp work is clearly paying dividends for the Sooners pledge, who burst onto the scene as a big-time target last fall with 64 catches for 1,108 yards and 13 scores.

4-Star CB Elijah Molden

7 of 8

Class: 2017

High School: West Linn (West Linn, Oregon)

Size: 5'11", 185 lbs

Composite Ranking: No. 22 cornerback; No. 183 overall

Recruitment Status: Uncommitted; offers include Oregon, Stanford and Washington

Expect Elijah Molden to make his greatest collegiate impact in the defensive backfield but he currently serves as a two-way catalyst for West Linn. Lined up at both running back and receiver on offense, he tallied three total touchdowns in a 55-27 victory over Oregon City High School.

Molden pulled down a pair of touchdown passes during the onslaught, according to Jerry Ulmer of The Oregonian. He added another score on the ground, gaining 118 rushing yards on just 11 carries. Performances like this will put him on pace to surpass 1,000 rushing yards for a second straight season (his 2015 campaign featured five 100-yard efforts, per MaxPreps).

3-Star WR Jordan Pouncey

8 of 8

Class: 2017

High School: Winter Park (Winter Park, Florida)

Size: 6'2", 185 lbs

Composite Ranking: No. 100 receiver; No. 671 overall

Recruitment Status: Committed to Notre Dame

Jordan Pouncey is doing his best to warrant a leap in recruit rankings early this season. The Sunshine State stud, a do-it-all athlete who commands collegiate attention at multiple positions, put on a show out of the offensive backfield Friday night.

He needed just five carries to fill the stat sheet, finishing the game against West Orange High School with 157 rushing yards and three touchdowns, according to Chris Hays of the Orlando Sentinel. His scores occurred on sprints of 45, 46 and 58 yards, and provided a surprise for even Pouncey.

"I haven't played running back since elementary school and to go out there and score three touchdowns as a running back... I don't even know what to say," he told Hays.
