Chelsea vs. Burnley: Score and Reaction from 2016 Premier League Match

James DudkoAug 27, 2016

Chelsea went top of the Premier League after beating Burnley 3-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. Eden Hazard and Willian were on the scoresheet in the first half to cap a fantastic display of attacking football from the Blues.

Chances kept coming for manager Antonio Conte's side after the break. However, it took until a minute from time for substitute Victor Moses to net the third.

Conte again picked a starting XI that didn't feature classy playmaker Cesc Fabregas, per the club:

Meanwhile, Burnley boss Sean Dyche boldly kept faith with a two-up-top approach that featured Liverpool conquerors Sam Vokes and Andre Gray:

It was a brave approach for such a difficult away fixture, and one Dyche may have been ruing when the hosts took the lead inside the first five minutes. Even without Fabregas, Chelsea's passing was slick early on, and it was Nemanja Matic who released Hazard with a well-timed ball.

The jet-heeled Belgian winger didn't waste the chance, running nearly half the length of the pitch before curling a fine shot beyond Tom Heaton.

Here's a snap of the finish courtesy of the Premier League's official site:

It was a sweet strike that continued Hazard's return to form in front of goal in England's top flight, per OptaJoe:

Some of Chelsea's football was very pleasing on the eye early on. In particular, their electric pace in wide areas was combining well with the intelligent distribution from Matic and the deft touches of Brazilian maestro Oscar.

Burnley responded by making the game physical. Not surprisingly, controversial Chelsea striker Diego Costa came in for some close attention, as this shot from Squawka shows:

Still, Chelsea attacked in waves. They might have doubled their lead from a John Terry header, but even his miss couldn't dampen such an exuberant display of attacking football.

The reward for such bright play came when Willian made it two less than five minutes before half-time. Good hold-up work from Costa teed up the Brazilian, who placed his shot with power and accuracy.

The assist further endorsed Costa's major influence in the final third during the early part of this season, according to WhoScored.com:

Chelsea kept piling the pressure on after the break, but Costa fluffed two one-on-one opportunities before Terry inexplicably missed from close range.

Overall, though, the second half was about measured control for the hosts. Conte's team kept their passing neat and steady, while Burnley showed little intent to gain some consolation.

There was still time for Moses to skilfully slot past Heaton to make a scoreline more reflective of Chelsea's dominance.

Afterwards, Dyche was in no mood to talk up Hazard's superb show, per ESPN's Miguel Delaney:

However, Dyche did good-naturedly defend Hazard's form last season, even making one cheeky suggestion:

The Burnley manager also paid homage to Chelsea's tough structure on the pitch:

Meanwhile, Conte rued the upcoming international break as an obvious disruption to Chelsea's momentum, per the club:

The Italian also fittingly lauded the quality of the football his team produced on the day:

Finally, Conte described the type of spirit he wants to create at Chelsea:

That type of togetherness would make a huge difference for a club defined more by in-fighting last season during the final days of former manager Jose Mourinho's era and much of the 2015/16 campaign.

Conte's side have swept their way to nine points even though they don't look as though they've hit top gear yet. It's a positive omen for a side whose title bid won't be burdened by European football this season.
