Gianni VerschuerenAug 22, 2016

Manchester United couldn't continue their perfect start to the 2016-17 Premier League 2 season on Monday, as the Red Devils' under-23 side lost 2-0 at Southampton.

The Saints dominated large stretches of the match and took advantage of some sloppy finishing from the Red Devils, bagging both of their goals in the second half.

Elsewhere, Tottenham Hotspur grabbed their first win of the season, and Chelsea cruised to a win against Liverpool. Here's a look at Monday's results:

Recap

James Weir started up front for United, which didn't feature any of the fringe senior players fans may have expected like Andreas Pereira and Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Southampton were the aggressors early on, hurting the United defence with their remarkable pace in attack, and goalkeeper Dean Henderson was busy early on, as shared by the Saints' official Twitter account:

Weir missed a golden opportunity after just seven minutes after a great run from Scott McTominay, who played an excellent first half and was one of the team's main bright spots. Saints remained the better side, however, although chances were rare.

The best chance of the half fell to Weir, who inexplicably missed from just a few yards out after the goalkeeper dropped a routine catch. Here's a look at the highlight:

Axel Tuanzebe made a key tackle early in the second half to stop his team from falling behind, denying Olufela Olomola, who was through on goal with only Henderson to beat.

The star man missed a key clearance just minutes later, however, and Josh Sims took full advantage, putting the hosts ahead. Jack Stephens doubled their lead shortly after, heading home a corner just as United's players tasked to guard the net left their lines.

Saints were now picking United apart on the counter, and Olomola only just missed with a first-time shot. Devonte Redmond nearly hit back with a flick that was cleared off the line.

Chelsea had it easy on Monday, cruising to a 4-1 win over Liverpool.

Swansea beat Wolves in a spectacle match, winning 3-2, and Everton continued their fine form with a 2-0 win over Derby.

One of the most spectacular matches of the day took place in the afternoon, with Stoke City grabbing their first win of the season against Norwich. The hosts had two players sent off in the span of seven minutes, as Todd Cantwell and Ben Killip both received their marching orders towards the end of the contest.

At the time, the Potters were already playing with 10 men following the dismissal of Johnville Renee-Pringle.

Marcus Edwards guided Tottenham to their first win of the season, scoring a brace as Spurs beat Reading 4-1.
